Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide! I was talking to a woman at the weekend about recycling and she said that since everything we use comes from the earth, we should really be able to safely return it to the earth - albeit perhaps in a different form. She feels we should be thinking differently about the way we might be damaging the planet and I agreed that she has a point. We both felt that it's the way we so carelessly discard things we've used that's causing many of the problems. We went on to discuss the many products made from recycled plastics and she proudly told me about her new blankets. She was dismayed when I told her about the fibres leaching into the washing machine - and thus our waterways - during the laundry process, so she won't be buying more! She was interested in learning about my loft insulation which is still going strong several years after installation. If you missed the leader in which I wrote about it, the product - made from 100% recycled plastic bottles - cost roughly the same as conventional insulation yet has a higher thermal value and doesn't require the use of goggles or protective clothing and gloves during fitting. Sunglasses made from recycled materials that come with a lifetime warranty were new to me and when they're funded by a Kickstarter campaign that reaches its target within 24-hours, you know the manufacturer is onto something good. Avalon sunglasses are produced in ISO9000, ISO14000 and SEDEX-certified factories from high-quality recycled materials. The frames are of Italian recycled polycarbonate - an ultra-lightweight material that's tough but flexible and which resists impact and high temperatures. The scratch-resistant lenses, produced from German TAC, are polarized category-3 UV400. But it's not just the product that's so eco-friendly - all the packaging and cleaning cloths are made from recycled materials too, in a low-energy process. And now comes the really good bit... For every backer in the Kickstarter campaign, Avalon collects one Kilo of plastic from the ocean and for each pair of sunglasses produced, it will be recycling one plastic bottle. The glasses come in four styles and four colourways and you can see them at: And when you consider all the plastics we thought we'd seen the last of, coming back to us from Malaysia, we'd do well to find more ways of making something useful from the stuff! We understand that the client originally enquired after oscillation... "And whilst we are big fans of this technology," says Factory Cat, "It's not the best idea in a busy workshop!" Factory Cat's Micro-HD floor scrubber dryer simultaneously scrubs and sweeps, which means the job gets done more quickly. Any debris, nuts and bolts etc. (hopefully not too many of those left over from a car service!) are automatically deposited into a removable hopper for ease of disposal and drain blockages on site are minimised due to the automatic separation of solids from liquids. CMS Berlin 2019: Hotels and catering form important target group The organisers of CMS Berlin 2019 - Cleaning. Management.Services. say that one of the show's main target groups is decision-makers responsible for cleaning in the hotel and catering sector, since there are few industries that place such an emphasis on the importance of cleanliness and hygiene for ensuring personal wellbeing.
The CMS Practical Forum on 25th September is specifically aimed that these industry representatives. Programme to end open defecation in Jharkhand ends up transforming gender roles The Indian state of Jharkhand is one of the areas where misconceptions about menstruation are widespread, with young women banned from socialising with friends, from cooking, playing sports, going to school, sleeping on beds or going outside at all. In many parts of India, this is a reality for girls when they're on their period. There is a common belief that the blood released during menstruation is impure, and everyday activities are restricted as a result. The taboo of menstruation also means that many girls aren't learning about their periods or menstrual hygiene at home or in school. Ecocleen selects Keep Britain Tidy as its corporate charity Ecocleen has selected Keep Britain Tidy as its corporate charity for the next 12 months. The company, a leading commercial contract cleaning provider, will raise awareness of the charity's campaign to reduce litter, improve local places and prevent waste as well as raise more than £5,000. "Ecocleen is passionate about the environment, so we share common goals and objectives with Keep Britain Tidy when it comes to creating a cleaner, greener country," comments Jean-Henri Beukes, managing director of Ecocleen. "As an eco-engaged business with a green heritage, we are acutely aware of our responsibility to operate in a sustainable manner." Stephen Cameron, business development director, SWRnewstar, writes... "UK supermarkets and the Government are raising the stakes when it comes to removing single-use plastic. New study finds the germiest places in cars aren't where people think Drivers assume that the germiest places in their cars are the places they touch most, but it's the places that go unnoticed that need the most attention, according to a recent consumer survey and car swab test conducted by CloroxPro.
The studies also found that even though having a clean, sanitised car makes drivers feel better, they don't realise how having a germy car might affect their health. GumBusters: Who you gonna call? The Pulire exhibition in Verona is renowned for showcasing the latest technologies in all fields of environment management and cleaning technology, so it comes as no surprise that the innovative cordless gum removal technology from OspreyDeepclean was so well received there recently. Visitors to the stand were especially enthusiastic about the use of a renewable power source to operate the already environmentally friendly dry steam-cleaning units in the GumBusters range. Jungheinrich and Riwal Agree to cooperate internationally Jungheinrich, the international intralogistics provider, and Riwal, the international aerial work platform and telehandler rental specialist will work together in the future on an international scale to rent their equipment.
Jungheinrich will use Riwal aerial work platforms for logistics centers, while Riwal will be able to offer Jungheinrich forklifts to customers in other segments. Addressing Plastics at CHSA Conference: an update We have further news on the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association's conference taking place on Thursday 13th June, which we featured earlier this month... Hearing from waste management experts spanning collection to recycling, delegates to the forthcoming CHSA conference taking place at the National Space Centre, Leicester, will gain the insight and understanding they need to address the challenge of plastic in their businesses. They will also get an update on the legislative environment and, via a case study, learn about a waste management strategy in action. But how does that benefit the customer? Service providers need to know the difference between a feature of their service and a benefit, argues Ron Segura, founder and president of Segura & Associates, a consulting company working with contract service providers in cleaning, landscaping, and other industries... "When service providers respond to a request for a proposal and are not selected, very often they believe it is because of price. The customer, they believe, always selects the low bidder. Bluewater management impressed with Incentive FM's work The management team of Bluewater, Europe's leading retail and leisure destination, has been so impressed with Incentive FM's operational delivery and strategic management over the past three years, that it has awarded the independent facilities management company, a new five-year contract. Under the terms of the contract, Incentive FM is continuing to deliver a full portfolio of security, cleaning, M&E, concierge, landscaping, management and administration services at the 240-acre Bluewater site. City Corporation clamps down on dishonest restaurants The City of London Corporation is clamping down on dishonest restaurants that display inaccurate food hygiene ratings in their windows. Recent spot checks by the City Corporation's Trading Standards officers found that out of 140 food premises visited, 22 of them (16%) were displaying a Food Hygiene Rating Scheme sticker higher than they were entitled to. Trading Standards subsequently visited the offending premises and oversaw the removal of the inaccurate stickers. Each visit was followed up with a written warning to the food business, reminding them of their legal obligations to ensure that consumers were not being misled. Greyland sponsors 9 Peaks Challenge in aid of 4 charities At over 4,000 feet each, the combined heights of the nine peaks is actually higher than Everest, the world's highest mountain! However you add it up, it's still 10 out of 10 for climbers Martin Wardroper, Chris Wright and their main sponsors, which includes cleaning chemicals manufacturer Greyland. Greyland's MD Richard Dyson (right) is here seen wishing Greenham Trading's Head of Corporate Accounts Martin Wardroper (left) well on his hectic trek in the Scottish Mountains.
