Welcome to the Cleanzine
When I took part in the British Institute of Cleaning Science’s COPC (Cleaning Operative Proficiency Certificate) cleaning & certification program some two decades ago, I became more aware of the many hazards a cleaner faces than I did about the process of cleaning itself. This isn’t a dig at the training but an acknowledgement of how well put together it was. Prior to my training and subsequent certification I’d thought that the only real hazard a cleaner faced was abuse by members of the general public, but I soon learned about the dangers of mixing chemicals that shouldn’t be put together, the hazards caused by using machinery and equipment incorrectly (or operating such items that haven’t been well-maintained so may well be highly dangerous), body spillages which – if handled incorrectly – can cause debilitating illness, the carelessly discarded/carefully hidden hypodermic needles/syringes and weapons such as knives, which can cause serious injury or even death, the need to wear the correct clothing and particularly footwear… The list goes on. This new-found knowledge was something I’ve carried with me ever since and it’s given me a respect for those involved in the business of cleaning that I didn’t have previously – and not just the cleaners themselves but those whose job it is to train them. Get it wrong and lives may be lost.
News surfaced yesterday about Polish hygiene operative, Remigiusz Cyrek, who was using a pressure washer to carry out the weekly deep clean of a carrot baton manufacturing machine at a food processing factory in Fife, Scotland. The machine and its rollers - still running at the time, dragged Mr Cyrek in by the hood of his waterproof jacket and strangled him to the point of unconsciousness. Luckily he wasn’t working alone and his colleague, who found him unconscious under the conveyor with the hood of his jacket still tangled in the roller, screamed for help. Colleagues switched off the machine and worked to free Mr Cyrek who was taken to hospital. Fortunately apart from severe swelling and bruising to his neck, a loss of feeling in his fingertips and ongoing pain in his hand, he was OK. His employers are said to have had a system in place which, if understood and followed properly, would have ensured everyone’s safety. I’ve come across this statement so often over the years and have learnt upon investigation that sometimes employees are forced to follow unsafe practices because their employers don’t take health & safety seriously, while at others, the best systems fail simply because employees have ignored the rules. In some cases it can even be a mix of the two. It’s good to know that Mr Cyrek is still functioning and I’m hoping that lessons can be learned from this case – not just by those at his company but by everyone running machinery that needs regular cleaning and those whose job it is to do the work.
