Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide! Years ago, as editor of Cleaning & Hygiene Today (CHT), I produced my first 'daily' from an exhibition. I vaguely recall being perched on a lidded bin and it wasn't even in a press office, but a large cupboard within the Birmingham NEC complex. I hand wrote the copy as there wasn't a computer available, which was subsequently faxed to a colleague who then keyed it into a computer, saved it to a floppy disk and handed it to the designer for laying out to page, which would be printed and couriered overnight from Kent up to the show. My colleague was sat with his foot in a bucket of ice as he'd injured his foot. I'm producing today's copy, not from Interclean Amsterdam as had been planned, but from my home office, thanks to a stress fracture in my foot. Yes - I'm missing my first Interclean Amsterdam since the late 80s (and I don't like it one bit). Luckily, technology's moved on since my days on CHT. John Austen's walking the show floor on my behalf, checking out what's new and interesting, and is WhatsApping me the pictures and any relevant notes. He's enjoying the networking, the camaraderie, the refreshments (he tells me the alcoholic smoothies on the ISSA stand are very good!) and the nightlife and I'm stuck at home with my foot this time in a bucket of ice... I sincerely hope to see you at Interclean Amsterdam in 2020, and in the meantime, happy reading - and make mine a Margarita! Sun shines on beautiful Amsterdam in time for Interclean's opening Those of us in the know say that the mark of a good exhibition is its ability to get the crowds through the doors when it's warm and sunny outside... Well, as our pictures show, Interclean is - as usual - a winner. We don't as yet have exact visitor numbers for the first couple of days, but the show is definitely very busy. Not missing a trick though, the organisers have opened up a new hall which fronts a refreshment area next to one of the canals. And with 13 halls full of stands, refreshments are definitely needed... Absolutely idyllic - even if there is work to do! The RAI exhibition centre's almost floor-to-ceiling windows provide an impressive demonstration area and enable potential buyers to trial equipment in a 'live' situation. Kärcher wins Amsterdam Innovation Award 2018 Interclean Amsterdam, the world's leading tradeshow for cleaning professionals, opened with the announcement that Kärcher, with its Kira B50 autonomous cleaning machine, had beaten 88 entries to win the winner Amsterdam Innovation Award.
The machine boasts a step forward in robotics technology for the cleaning industry and overcomes some of the obstacles of similar machines. Tork Paper Circle from Essity wins Visitor's Choice Award The visitor's choice prize is awarded to the nominee voted as the most innovative by Interclean Amsterdam visitors. With 39% percent of the votes, Tork Paper Circle from Essity is the winner of the Visitor's Choice Award 2018. Tork PaperCircle is turning the hand drying business on its head by offering the world's first paper hand towel recycling service, helping businesses go circular, cutting the carbon footprint of paper hand towels by 40% and paving the way for future change in standards on what can be recycled and included as accepted paper grades. Congratulations to Vectair Systems; celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year! As well as showcasing many impressive innovations, the company is welcoming stand visitors with a medley of hot waffles or crepes with a choice of topping, or sushi - depending upon the day and time they visit, and cocktails served up by the 'Shaker Boys' every evening. Founded in April 1988 by CEO Paul Wonnacott (pictured) from his small bedroom in the UK, the company have progressed over the 30 years to be a world leader in aircare and hygiene, holding many International patents and trademarks. RAI Amsterdam once again supports AMREF Flying Doctors The proceeds of the Amsterdam Innovation Awards, which come from the entry fees, are donated to AMREF Flying Doctors, to support their projects in Kilindi, Tanzania. Their Mission is to improve the general health of girls and young woman by introducing the alternative rite of passage for female genital cutting and increasing the access to safe drinking water, good sanitation and hygiene. This year, the Awards have contributed 12,000 Euros to the organisation's funding. Cleanovate - future engineering by Hako The future of cleaning technology lies not in ever-higher area performances alone. Sustainable, eco-friendly solutions and comfort-enhancing features which increase the operator's efficiency, are important key factors too, as are digital services providing more transparency and shorter response times.
Hako's stand showcased a wide range of impressive pioneering solutions which, already today, are contributing to the shaping of tomorrow's world of cleaning technology. Inspecting the goods at Ecolab An exhibition provides a great way of learning more about a company's products, and when it comes to chemicals, properties such as viscosity and odour will naturally play their part in how they're received by the cleaning teams that are going to have to work with them. Ecolab delivers comprehensive solutions and on-site service to deliver safe food, maintain clean environments, optimise water and energy use and improve operational efficiencies for customers in the food, healthcare, energy, hospitality and industrial markets in more than 170 countries around the world. Proandre on lookout for new distributors across the globe Spanish manufacturer of hygiene systems for the washroom and accessories for the pest control business, Proandre, was on the lookout at Interclean for new agents/distributors. The company specialises in auto sanitisers, sanitary bins (manual, automatic or with pedal), air fresheners (with fan, aerosol), nebulizsers, soap and gel dispensers (manual or automatic), hand dryers, ozone generators, insect catcher lamps, tissue dispensers, urinal screens and chemicals. TomCat's new scrubbers are easy to operate and have a wealth of features TomCat's new EX 29 - 34" scrubbers are attracting attention and one of their key benefits is that they require little training to be able to operate them successfully. For example, the machine control panel uses off-the-shelf toggle and marine duty switches featuring universal icons which simplifies training, and the squeegee adjustments have been made simple with tool-less maintenance of the squeegee blade. Bring on the dancing ladies... As if having a fabulous range of both newly-launched and established machines and systems on display isn't enough, Truvox International has a troupe of toe-tapping traditional Dutch folk dancers and the Photo Dolls ("capture the moment") on the stand! David Overell, (pictured here without any Photo Dolls!) said that the company's new Valet Battery Upright II is unique to the market and that it offers pristine cleaning results without the inconvenience of a cable. Company fined for exposing employees to dust A furniture manufacturer has been fined after exposing its employees to significant quantities of hardwood dust, a hazardous substance known to cause occupational asthma and nasal cancer. It was noted that the absence of a 'robust cleaning regime' had exacerbated the problems. Luton Magistrates' Court heard how employees in Andrena Furniture's workshop were exposed to hardwood dust on a daily basis. One of the reasons for such high levels of the hazardous substance was found to be the company's extraction system, which when tested during an HSE inspection in 2016, was found to be inefficient.
