It only takes one idiot to damage the high regard built up over the past 20 months for the cleaning industry, and this street cleaner here, filmed on 20th September in Camden, North London, has my vote as being that idiot.

https://twitter.com/streetskitchen/status/

Commenters on Twitter say they're seeing "an ever-growing vicious hostile environment for those experiencing homelessness", which I find incredibly disturbing. Having to sleep on the streets must be among some of the worst experiences a human being can go through. For someone to take advantage of a helpless and vulnerable person in this way is despicable. I hope his employer - I gather it's a private contractor - has already sacked him. He doesn't deserve to be able to call himself a cleaner.

In complete contrast, you'll see several news pieces this week regarding a professional UK body that does only good: The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners. Looking at all the pictures of the events covered, I felt very proud of an industry that's able to embrace its heritage in this way. I reflected for a moment on what it must be like to be responsible for running the contracts or to physically clean some of the historic buildings pictured, along with their contents (swords, shields, armour... all hundreds of years old) - and also some of the newer ones that inspire awe when we look at them. Do the cleaners, when walking past with family or friends, or seeing it on TV, point to the building and proudly say: "I clean that"? I would! All this made me wonder whether there are equivalents to the WCEC in other parts of the world. If there are, and you're involved, I'd love to learn more about what you do - and also if you're involved in cleaning a building of importance or historic significance.
