Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide!

* LEADER-PIC-7thMar.jpgWorking across both the cleaning and the kitchens, bathrooms & bedrooms industry, it's something I've often been asked about and ended up in discussion over, but I've never thought about delving into the past to get the answer... I'd always thought it was a matter of opinion. But no.

Thanks to Australian consumer group Choice, whose researchers have taken the trouble to look at the 128-year-old patent for the traditional toilet roll and holder, the issue has now been solved. Choice uncovered the patent from September 1891 with images depicting the paper going up and over the roll, rather than underneath it and down beside the wall.

"We have a conclusive answer to the controversial question of whether to hang your toilet paper over or under the roll," says the group. "At risk of permanently losing members, we're here to answer it once and for all: over is the correct method. Perforated toilet paper was invented in 1871 by Seth Wheeler. He subsequently re-patented his invention in roll form in 1891. His patent application includes detailed diagrams that clearly show the paper going up and over the roll, not under. So placing your toilet paper overhand is using this wonder product precisely as its creator intended."

And yes - I've been doing it wrong all my life, but I put that down as much to always having had small bathrooms as I do to anything else. And no, I'll probably not change!

Most people have said to me that they hang the paper in the same way as their parents did; some however, like it going down the wall to prevent the end from tickling their legs or to prevent dust build up on the exposed sheets, while others don't do it this way for fear of having users contaminate the wall as they touch it to tear off a sheet. Some contractors I've spoken with have said that although the dispensers they use are designed for the roll to go up and over, they deliberately put the roll in upside down to reduce waste, as it's more difficult to let the roll run free that way - clever that!

Ideal machine for cleaning and sanitising any area with floor drainage

* Idrofoam-rinse.jpgThe electrically-powered IdroFoamRinse200 is ideal for cleaning non-carpeted areas that do not require vacuuming before cleaning and which have drains in the floor, such as washrooms, saunas, swimming pools, showers, gyms, changing rooms and camping grounds.

The machine can spray foam and rinse continuously, since it takes the water used in the process directly from the facility's water supply (as opposed to having its own tank), so downtime tends to be dictated by the machine's user, rather than the machine itself.

Removing graffiti gently and without harming the environment

* Removing-graffiti-gently.jpgLarge cities pay up to one million euros a year to have graffiti removed from public areas. And it is estimated that smaller cities pay up to 200,000 euros a year at least. Municipal decision-makers, service providers and employees of housing associations are looking for an easy, reliable, gentle yet environmentally-friendly method of removing unwanted graffiti.

With its Tornado ACS, Systeco is offering an integrated, all-in-one solution based on the vacuum-blasting method. The unit uses a blasting agent specially selected for each surface, which is applied to the area to be cleaned. The paint particles are removed from the substrate and separated from the abrasive by a filter. The abrasive can then be used on the surface again to remove the paint.
