Welcome to the Cleanzine
It may not be the thing to say in this day and age but I love the differences in people’s cultures and one of the many things that’s made me grateful to live in the era of the Internet, is that it’s brought us all closer in terms of being able to travel, (virtually) and explore the cultures and learn about the traditions enjoyed in places we’ll never visit. I realise television has had its part to play in this over the decades but the Internet has allowed us to properly interact with those keeping the traditions alive and delve far deeper than we would otherwise be able to. I’m grateful to have experienced some of these traditions first hand by groups visiting my country, who’ve had the patience to teach us how to take part in their rituals and dances, and sing songs in their languages, knowing the true meaning of the movements and words and thus feeling the emotion behind them.
Of course we have our fair share of traditions in the UK and this year we’ve seen more than usual, during Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations this Summer followed in Autumn by her death and the pomp and ceremony that came with honouring her life and Charles being pronounced King.
Last week we remembered and honoured those who lost their lives or were injured in battle, (why haven’t we learned?) and crowds lined the streets to watch the annual Lord Mayor’s Parade in London. I’ve mentioned in many of my Leaders how our cleaners not only have to clear up the mess that results from these gatherings and parades but also have to prepare the area beforehand. Occasionally cleaners have been honoured by being given a role in opening ceremonies such as for the Commonwealth Games but I believe (and do correct me if I’m wrong) that the Lord Mayor’s Parade is the only national ceremony in which our industry regularly takes pride of place amongst everyone else. I love this picture of The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners’ Master Gary Fage, Court Assistant Phil Smith and Liveryman Callum Mcleod who had a “wonderful day” on the Modern Livery Companies’ float this year and I hope you’ll join me in wishing the Company congratulations on its 50th birthday and thanking it for the good work it does in supporting charities and promoting our industry in style!

BCC calls for entire cleaning sector to consider paying a real Living Wage To mark Living Wage Week, (which is this week) the British Cleaning Council has renewed its call for cleaning & hygiene sector businesses and organisations to consider also becoming real Living Wage Employers. Supporting the real Living Wage means committing to paying employees a wage which is independently calculated to meet everyday needs - like the weekly shop, or a surprise trip to the dentist. Cigarette butts account for 66% of all litter and can be found in every corner Great Britain - on our streets, in our countryside, our parks and beaches, our waterways and, finally, in the sea.
In fact, new research for Keep Britain Tidy reveals that, right now, there are 2.4 million cigarette butts littered on England's high streets, despite the efforts of local authorities to clean them up on a daily basis. CHSA issues 'cease and desist' notice to company claiming Accredited status The Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association has issued a 'cease and desist' notice to a Turkish manufacturer of plastic sacks claiming CHSA Accredited status. Truvox delivers effective, efficient cleaning solution for care sector environment Cleaning in a care environment needs to balance achieving aesthetically pleasing results with ensuring health, hygiene and safety. We talk to Truvox International UK sales manager Simon Constantine and account manager Mark Maslin to discover why one of the company's products delivers consistently great results… "The care sector is very important for us, and while we offer a wide range of solutions, the Multiwash Pro perfectly delivers its needs, for quick and efficient deep cleaning across a wide range of different flooring types," says Simon Constantine. Innovation and your product: how to be innovative Matt Wonnacott, founder of Ennovamark, writes… Innovation, especially product innovation, is all around us, 24/7. Think of your latest Alexa product, to the latest automatic watch and that e-hybrid/electric car that sits on the drive. It forms part of our everyday life - now and in the future. In the aircare environment think of the transition away from traditional aerosols to alternative forms of metered systems that are more efficient, powerful and reliable. Or think of how washroom systems are becoming 'connected' to one another. Customers demand (and deserve) innovation and manufacturers have a duty to meet these requirements. "As experts in high-performance urinal screens, we are constantly looking for ways to ensure we offer products that meet the needs of our customers,” says P-Wave sales & marketing manager Mark Wintle. “As these needs evolve, so must our product range.” Travertine tiled kitchen floor refinished in Kings Norton The photographs below are of a Travertine tiled floor installed in the kitchen of a 17th century cottage in the small Leicestershire village of Kings Norton. The owner had called Leicester Tile Doctor in to deep clean and refinish the Travertine tiles which had become soiled, dull, the grout had darkened in places and there were lots of holes that needed filling. This issue is quite normal for a natural stone floor which benefits from having a sealer in place to stop dirt from becoming trapped in the pores. Travertine can also suffer from pitting which are small holes in the surface of the tile; these pits attract dirt and should be filled to prevent that from happening.
