Cleaners and those involved in waste management have once again been highlighted as an at-risk group when it comes to occupational cancer as a result of exposure to carcinogens in cleaning products – this time in a report just published by the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work.
Said to be some 90% less corrosive than rock salt, it is non-toxic to vegetation and grass, it minimises rust damage and won't tread into and harm carpets. It is also non-harmful to wildlife.

The Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances’ pre-Christmas food waste survey, revealed that our enthusiasm for recycling wilts when it comes to food scraps. While an impressive 87% of we Brits say we put out paper and card for recycling, 84% recycling plastic, 77% recycling glass and 75% recycling metal, only 41% of us bother recycling our food waste, meaning that our less frequently collected ‘main’ waste bin may attract more than a parking ticket when the weather gets hot!
Food waste that’s not recycled either goes to landfill or is incinerated; emitting greenhouse gases and wasting valuable biogas, precious soil nutrients and vital resources such as phosphorus. Clearly something needs to be done to change our behaviour…
Another report this week, discusses our need to embrace ‘cradle-to-cradle’ rather than cradle-to-grave’ manufacturing; it says that this could create an extra 200,000 jobs, which can’t be bad, can it?
I’m known for whinging about the waste I witness whenever I’ve visited the local tip, with perfectly good sofas, beds, carpets and other furnishings dumped simply because they’re grubby or no longer to the (ex)owner’s taste. When I show potential buyers around properties during my weekend estate agency job, I answer their “Those filthy carpets will have to go” comments by saying that a good cleaning technician will quickly (and for a lot less expense) bring them back to virtually ‘as new’ condition.
For anyone who doubts this, just look at these before and after shots from the multi-award-winning Chris Straker (www.straker.cleaning) of Sutton-based Straker Cleaning – who also happens to have been cleaning carpets and upholstery in the Houses of Parliament since 2005 and is one of only a couple of handfuls of certified Master Rug Cleaners in the UK. It's incredible what a good technician can achieve, isn't it? Cleaning - rather than wasting - just has to be the way forward!

Over 200,000 new jobs could be needed across Britain from the continued development of resource efficient activity to 2030, such as recycling, reuse and remanufacturing, according to a study by WRAP and Green Alliance.
The report 'Employment and the circular economy: job creation in a more resource efficient Britain', indicates that development of resource efficiency, unlike other industrial transitions, requires more labour.
Many businesses pride themselves on the standard of cleaning and standard of maintenance of the building they occupy or that they are responsible for cleaning. The most frequent place visited by most users of the building is the washrooms. First impressions count and high standard must be achieved consistently if the provider's reputation is to be maintained.
As a service provider how do you know how you compare with your competitors and how do you gain recognition?
The success of Idiots on Ladders mirrored a record-breaking year for the Ladder Exchange, which traded over 15% more ladders than in the previous year, continuing its three straight years of growth since being taken over by the Ladder Association in 2012.
Matt Wonnacott of Vectair Systems, draws our attention to inaccuracies in an article published recently in Cleanzine and a number of other industry publications...
Dear Jan and John, I have been made aware of an article written about Ecobreeze recently (which was included in most magazines) which contained some inaccurate information. Here is the link:
Accordingly, this month's Business of the Business from Tornado, a leading manufacturer of professional cleaning equipment, lists the top five challenges cleaning contractors may grapple with in 2015 - and although the company is US-based, the challenges are facing businesses everywhere:
Gel-type cleaning products have become very popular due to the additional contact time that this type of product has even on vertical surfaces, allowing the cleansing action to cut right through stubborn grease and grime.
Formulated by Greyland with the fresh citrus scent and cleaning power of lemons, their new Lemon Cleanser Gel is effective in cleaning and maintaining most hard surfaces.
Having a cluttered desk may not be a bad thing, a new survey from OfficeTeam suggests. More than two-thirds (68%) of human resources managers interviewed felt it's at least somewhat acceptable to have a messy desk at work.
In fact, 9% even said it's a sign of a creative person. However, nearly one-third (32%) stated they would question an employee's organisational skills and effectiveness if that person had an unkempt workspace.
Recognising the rise of social media and the importance of video in the way consumers now like to communicate, leading hygiene manufacturer Vectair Systems has launched a YouTube channel containing a new range of product videos. The videos have been produced by a leading production company using a film crew that has worked on BBC productions including Eastenders and Casualty.

Established in 1985, Rosemor International specialises in the manufacture and supply of precision-engineered escalator cleaning equipment and the company is starting 2015 with a bang (as we say in this neck of the woods) by offering current customers using the old Rotomac equipment the opportunity to part exchange it for a new Rotomac ET15B.
"Rotomac ET15B has been developed for a better performance," says the company's Efi Rosen. "It is the new generation of the machine... It is more efficient and built for longer term use."
The Cordant Group has this week announced the launch of Cordant Services, in a move designed to offer additional value and services to existing customers, whilst providing a strong foundation for an ambitious growth programme.

Just a few weeks ago, Macroclean, a company born out of the entrepreneurial vision of RCM and Macro, opened its doors to the Italian distributors for an open day devoted to the presentation of the new 2015 road sweeper models.
After the meeting, the guests visited Macroclean's production department and learned about the technical innovations enjoyed by the M60 model.

The multiyear contract will see MITIE deliver FM services, including maintenance and repairs, cleaning, front of house, waste management and mailroom services, at three of the broadcaster's sites.
