Welcome to the Cleanzine
It was heartwarming today - on the day that the UK cleaning industry properly recognises and celebrates its key players - to read that over-18s working in the contract cleaning industry in Ireland are to receive a 60 cents above-minimum-wage hourly pay rise from 1st June. I know this isn't a great deal of money in the big scheme of things and particularly so during the current economic difficulties, but it should make something of a difference for those who so deserve to be earning far more than they do. What impressed me is that the press statement has singled out the contract cleaning sector, which in my view helps validate it and show that people are realising more and more, the crucial role cleaning plays in everyone's wellbeing - along with, of course, our need to retain trained-up and enthusiastic people within the industry and prevent them from being tempted away into higher paid roles elsewhere! Furthermore, the pay increase looks as if it's been determined as a result of a public consultation. There's more on the story further down the page and I'll be looking into how this has come about for a follow up in Cleanzine.
Yes - this morning I'm heading into London to help celebrate more of the cleaning industry's successes at the Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards. I've been attending these Awards for some three decades and the excitement still hasn't waned after all that time - for me or apparently for everyone else who's been enjoying them for so many years. I'm looking forward to learning more about the winners and the facilities they're cleaning and discussing some of the problems they've had to overcome to achieve such excellence!
As members of the general public, we naturally expect our environment to be clean, but rarely do most people think about the work that goes into making it that way - unless of course something's clearly not clean and hygienic, which leads to a complaint. I wonder if those complaining ever stop to think that someone's hard toil is behind the fact that what they're complaining about isn't generally a problem? Or if they thank the cleaners who rush to rectify whatever's gone wrong?

'Forever chemicals' found to rain down on all five North American Great Lakes Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS or ‘forever chemicals’, have become persistent pollutants in the air, water and soil.
Because they are so stable, they can be transported throughout the water cycle, making their way into drinking water sources and precipitation. Last Friday, Interclean Amsterdam closed its doors after a four-day business and networking extravaganza that was bigger and better than ever before.
Visitors were treated to a whole new Interclean experience, where forging global connections, experiencing the newest innovations and discovering the latest trends were the centrepiece of the biggest Interclean Amsterdam to date. Ready, set, submit: MSL advocates for swift action on BPR dossiers for quats As the 1st July 2024 deadline for the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) dossiers for quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) approaches, leading regulatory and microbiological testing house, MSL Solution Providers, is urging manufacturers and suppliers of quat-containing biocidal products to expedite the preparation and submission of their dossiers. Quats are used in a variety of biocidal products, including disinfectants for surfaces and human hygiene. Highly effective at killing germs, they work by disrupting the cell membranes of bacteria and the outer layers of viruses, leading to their destruction. Time and cost spent on carbon reporting leading to decarbonisation delays Mitie has unveiled new survey findings revealing that the time and cost constraints from sustainability reporting are hampering progress towards sustainability goals for many organisations. Over half (55%) of sustainability leaders surveyed agreed that sustainability reporting requires too much admin and over a third are considering outsourcing their reporting as they think is "a waste of time". Implementing an effective trade border between the UK and the EU The UK's exit from the EU resulted in changes to how goods and services are traded between the two territories, and UK Government's repeated changing and deferring of its plans for the introduction of full import controls has caused uncertainty for businesses.
Published this week, the UK's National Audit Office's updated report, 'The UK border: Implementing an effective trade border', highlights some important issues: Logistics industry needs permanent solution to Operation Brock With traffic set to increase travel times and congestion through the ports between continental Europe and the UK this weekend thanks to school holidays, Logistics UK is urging the UK Government to identify and implement a permanent alternative to its Operation Brock traffic management scheme - the contraflow system set up to keep traffic on the M20 and surrounding roads in Kent moving during busy periods and which will be in place until 3rd June to manage the anticipated Bank Holiday surge in vehicles.
As Nichola Mallon, Logistics UK's Head of Trade explains, this will once again have an impact on those trying to keep goods moving to and from GB and Europe: Being sustainable will help tackle rising business costs "Many businesses still mistakenly believe that they have to make a choice between being sustainable and reducing their business costs," says Jason Smith, managing director of Phs Wastekit, which supports businesses with sustainable waste management solutions and equipment. "They don't understand that by prioritising sustainable waste management processes, they will not only divert waste from landfill and reduce their carbon footprint, but they will also make cost-savings and have money to re-invest back into the business."
