It always seems to be that at this time of year I feel very tired; I don’t know whether it’s due to the lack of sunlight and fresh air, the aftermath of the clocks going back in the UK (why can’t we stick with the continental Europeans and have an extra two hours of sunlight to enjoy during the Summer evenings?) or the thought of Christmas itself, but it happens every year.
Thanks then to The Ladder Association for a press release that arrived this morning, regarding its Festive Season ladder use campaign, designed to stop ‘Idiots on Ladders’ in their tracks before an accident does it instead. A visit to the Facebook page for an image soon had me in stitches; first thinking, “I’ve done that… I’d do that...” then, “Did they really do that? How stupid!” If you need a laugh and an energy boost do visit the page. Of course, it may just prevent you from having a nasty accident one day, if you take chances, as I sometimes do.
Something else that gave me a boost is news that East Staffordshire Borough Council is about to shut down the public toilet block in one of its parks. Why should this fill me with cheer? Because it’s a temporary closure to enable the block to be refurbished and upgraded – one of the reasons being to make it easier to clean! It makes me so happy to be able to write about a local authority having a responsible attitude to its public washrooms, rather than grumble about these essential amenities being shut down. You can read about it below.
Of course tomorrow is the day that John Austen and I will be mingling with a few hundred like-minded local authorities; suppliers of washroom fittings, fixtures, systems and disposables as well as public washroom users and associations of users, at the annual Loo of the Year Awards event. I’m looking forward to catching up on the latest news from that part of our vast industry and will be bringing you a rundown and pictures of the event in next week’s issue.
Tired? Me? Of course not!

BSI, the business standards company has revised PAS 5748, 'Specification for the planning, application and measurement of cleanliness services in hospitals'.
Sponsored by the Department of Health, the specification was first published in 2011 as a means of helping acute, community and mental health hospitals in England demonstrate that plans were in place to keep their premises clean and safe for patients. Of course its recommendations can be used in other facilities throughout the world.
Global demand for I&I cleaning chemicals is expected to grow over 4% per annum to more than $50 billion in 2018, with significant gains realised in the healthcare market segment, where a rise in the number of hospital stays and concerns about healthcare associated infections will drive increases in healthcare expenditures worldwide, says a new study.
Published by global market researcher, Bharat Book Bureau, the study also reveals that the manufacturing sector is also expected to be a strong source of growth, especially in developing economies, as these countries focus on increasing their cleaning standards. Disinfectants and sanitisers will benefit most from these trends. Across the industry, changes in the product mix are expected as firms increasingly focus on sustainability and oper
Following a turbulent 12 months in the facilities management sector which saw the merger of the Cleaning & Support Services Association with the Building Futures Group (formerly Asset Skills), the secretariat agreement between the British Cleaning Council and BFG has been severed by mutual consent.
The agreement was originally set up by Andrew Large when he was CEO of the CSSA and it was felt, at the time, that the BCC had found a perfect partner within the cleaning industry to take on the important role of managing its affairs.
As part of the Healthy Workplaces Manage Stress campaign, the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has launched its e-guide on managing stress and psychosocial risks. Stress is an important occupational safety & health (OSH) concern in about 80% of European businesses and is one of the main reasons for lost working days in Europe.
However, fewer than a third of European establishments have procedures in place to deal with work-related stress. The e-guide is a practical tool to help both employers and workers, particularly of small businesses, better understand and manage stress and psychosocial risks.
Propelair, the UK designer and manufacturer of the revolutionary 1.5-litre flush toilet, is celebrating after being named the Engineering & Manufacturing Gold Winner in the national Green Apple Awards 2014 from The Green Organisation.
The Green Organisation recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world and the Green Apple Environmental Awards are presented annually to UK companies, councils and communities.
Truvox International has launched its new website, offering a crisp, modern look that emphasises its position as one of the most well-known and trusted manufacturers of industrial and commercial floor cleaning machines in the world.
The new design complements the company's move to new premises in Southampton, UK, which took place earlier this year.
Since then, these models have been submitted to the UK Noise Abatement Society for Quiet Mark assessment and both have been awarded this international mark of excellence, further demonstrating Airdri's commitment to the development of quiet hand dryers.
Soluclean, manufacturer of the award-winning Soluclean range of pre-dosed concentrated cleaning products encapsulated in water soluble film, has recently embarked on a major export drive which has taken the company to the far flung corners of the world... just recently, the company has exhibited at cleaning shows in Shanghai and Bangkok and was just last week in Ahmedabad, India, which is where we pick up the story...
System Hygienics has recently completed remedial work to ductwork at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley, Kent, following the hospital's fire damper testing programme. System Hygienics has more than 15 years' experience cleaning ductwork systems, and in the last few years has been testing fire dampers and carrying out remedial works where necessary, for NHS and private hospitals.
At the Princess Royal, the company modified fire and smoke dampers and nearby ductwork and access arrangements to ensure compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and with Health Technical Memorandum 03-01 'Specialised Ventilation for Healthcare Premises. Part B: Operational Management and Performance Verification.'
East Staffordshire Borough Council will be commencing a full refurbishment of the public toilets in Bramshall Park at the start of the New Year, as part of its ongoing commitment to provide improved facilities across the Borough.
"This is the third scheme we are undertaking as part of a three-year programme to refurbish all our public toilets and these works will significantly enhance the quality of the facility at Bramshall Park," reports Councillor Dennis Fletcher, Deputy Leader for Built Environment.
"The system atomises water in the surrounding area at variable flow rates, in order to obtain the desired humidity and temperature levels," says the manufacturer.
Industry body the Ladder Association is helping keep people safe over the Christmas period as part of its annual Ladder Exchange scheme, which gives people the chance to trade in old, dangerous ladders for discounted new ones.
Each month the Ladder Exchange focuses on one safety theme, and December's is all about the dangers unique to using a ladder around Christmas. On the Ladder Exchange website, a new Christmas section has been launched giving 'Five Festive Tips.'

"I attended the British Institute of Facilities Management London region event - 'Question Time' at Somerset House last month where one of the speakers made a comment which I thought was quite funny. When asked about the type of people he recruits, he said: "We like anyone who is nice."
The one day event was sold out well in advance and delegates were treated to superb array of keynote speeches written around the theme of the day 'changing perceptions.'
