Welcome to the Cleanzine
Apart from the Union Jack bunting still fluttering between houses and over lamp posts in some of our streets, very little remains to remind most of us that huge crowds gathered across Great Britain to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee less than two weeks ago. The celebrations encompassed everything from the thousands of people crammed into The Mall, to smaller gatherings in cities, towns, villages and streets all over. With such celebrations comes the inevitable mess and while the clean-up operations in the immediate aftermath of some of the larger gatherings received a fair bit of coverage in the press, the coverage didn't reflect the efforts those involved had to put into getting us all back to normal as quickly as possible. And it doesn't end there of course. While most of the general public will feel that once the rubbish is removed from our streets, the job is done, others of us know that in most cases this is just the beginning, with the process of sorting the waste to separate the recyclables from that destined for landfill and moving it all on to its destination, taking much longer and no doubt still continuing. And that's just the aftermath. It's no good going into a situation like this hoping for the best! The planning starts months before so that everything's carried off with the same sort of military precision the official celebrations themselves command. We expect nothing less. I'd like to say a huge 'Thank you' to everyone involved. Today I'm off to join the more private celebrations held at The Savoy Hotel in London each year by the UK's Cleaning & Support Services Association, whose members do so much to keep us all safe in our public spaces and workplaces by ensuring that everything not only looks clean, but is hygienically clean, too. I'm really looking forward to spending time with those who so ably represent the professional face of our cleaning industry and finding out how the Platinum Jubilee celebrations might have affected them.
