Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide!

Producing e-zines (pronounced e-zeens, as in emailed magazines!) across two industries as I do, I receive several hundred emails and press releases each week and as many aren’t relevant, I’ve become expert in rapidly whittling out those needing to be discarded.

One I quickly retrieved from the bin today though deserves a mention in this leader – not because of any relevance to cleaning per se, but because of the need for cleaning its subject might create… The release, sent by the US–based Canine Company, advises readers on how not to fall foul of * bring-your-dog-to-work-week.jpgcolleagues when participating in next Friday’s global ‘Take your dog to work’ event.

I kid you not.

I work from home and occasionally do battle with my cat over my workspace. He might wedge himself into my chair behind me – dislodging me, or he’ll nudge my mouse hand – creating unusual words - or nudge and move the screen. Sometimes he’ll wriggle between me and the keyboard so I can’t work until I’ve given him some attention.

He’ll occasionally make muddy footprints on my desk and while I don’t believe he has fleas, if he has, they’re in my home anyway and although he’s collected two ticks, they remained firmly mouthparts-embedded until I prised them out. What I’m saying is that it’s my choice to have him here together with any nasties he might bring in and my responsibility to clean up my workspace after me. And if he bothers anyone, it’s not my colleagues or the cleaners.

The advice given by the Canine Company is sound in as much as it tells people to be courteous of co-workers' needs (i.e. “a colleague with severe allergies or an overwhelming fear of dogs won't be comfortable around the best-behaved canine,” and "behaviours you find cute may not be well received by co-workers.") Quite. It also suggests placing a plastic mat under food/drink bowls to prevent carpet stains as well as bringing plastic bags for cleaning up after your pet – “just in case there's an accident”.

My advice would be, not to get involved in the first place. Little accidents aside, I once moved into a brand new 20-odd storey building to find the expensive carpets being ripped out and replaced because the first lot had fleas.

Employers face headache to fill key roles as three in four report recruitment difficulties

* resourcing-and-talent-infographic.jpgOrganisations are experiencing both escalating skills shortages and increased competition for talent, with three in four organisations (78%) reporting recruitment difficulties in the last year, according to the latest Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development /Hays Resourcing and Talent Planning Survey.

The survey, launched yesterday at the CIPD’s annual HR Software Show & Recruitment exhibition, shows that many organisations are having to look externally to meet the changing skills needed in-house. However, the CIPD is warning that equal attention needs to be given to the development of internal staff, to build a skilled and sustainable workforce in the long-term.

So much more than cleaning...

* Chris-Straker.jpgI first came across Chris Straker, of Straker Eco Carpet & Rug Care, via the local paper some years ago, when he won a Green Guardian Award for his carpet & upholstery cleaning business. I could so easily have forgotten about him but the fact that he kept on winning awards, year after year, meant that he was uppermost in my mind when some associates of mine needed a real professional to get to grips with a seriously grubby carpet.

Chris was keen to oblige and as the job was local to me I went along to observe.

* Soluclean-win.jpgCongratulations to Soluclean for winning the Facilities Show & Service Management Expo 2015 ‘best shell scheme stand’ award at this week’s event at London’s ExCel.

Site and transport safety simplified

A course taking place in London on 7th July 2015, organised by the government-body HSL, is designed to help you understand the legal requirements of both road traffic law and workplace safety law, how and why things go wrong, and how you can take practicable steps to reduce risk in your business.

Worker shows building managers a clean pair of heels

We’d hazard a guess that large numbers of the population spend some of their working hours pondering whether the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, as the saying goes… Well according to a Muncie Star Press report, one cleaner decided to find out for himself this week and ran off before he’d finished the lobby he was cleaning.
