The report follows a January 2015 release on smart coatings markets and reveals that smart solar surfaces (both photovoltaic panels that are monolithically integrated into roofs and windows and self-cleaning solar panels) will be big money spinners, together with self-cleaning walls, windows and other surfaces. Welcome to the Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide! Although we’re still awaiting the final visitor numbers and finer details of just who attended, the information released by the organisers of this month’s Cleaning Show echoes what John Austen and I were being told by the exhibitors whose stands we visited: it wasn’t just the quantity that impressed, but the quality too. Visitors included thousands of contract cleaners including all the major UK companies; more than 30 borough and city councils from Birmingham to the Scottish Parliament itself; at least 20 universities from as far afield as Exeter and Liverpool, some 30-plus hospitals and NHS trusts; representatives from transport companies and hubs such as the likes of EasyJet and Heathrow Airport as well as numerous train companies; purchasers from all of the major UK supermarkets; plus football clubs, banks, holiday and hotel companies and many major retailers with representatives from such places as the Trafford Centre and Harrods. We are told that there were also more international visitors than ever before. As we learn more we’ll share it with you; but suffice it to say that the event was considered a success by the majority of those who attended and looks set to start growing again. Hurrah! The next in the series is scheduled for 14th – 16th March 2017 and the British Cleaning Council’s Doug Cooke tells us that exhibition stand bookings are already well underway. Next month (from 22th – 24th April), it’s the turn of ISSA/Interclean Central & Eastern Europe and the show’s manager, Rob den Hertog, tells us that the show is currently attracting 43% new exhibitors of which 13% are new Polish companies. Visitor registrations have come from 65 countries, so that’s another show which is clearly ‘on the up’ and becoming more international to boot. Many stand staff tell us that they move from one cleaning exhibition to another, rarely going home – and while it’s lovely to meet up with old friends, one exhibition hall can look very much like another and this is where the location can make such a difference. In May, from 19th – 21st, the industry will converge at Pulire in the beautiful city of Verona, and whether it’s the location, the food, the lovely Italian people or a combination of all three, this is one show to get excited about! Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine

Forget bonus culture and use behavioural science to boost employee motivation, says new CIPD report Reward specialists and HR professionals could significantly increase employee motivation with a better understanding of the science behind the impact of pay and reward on employee behaviour. That's according to new research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, the professional body for HR and people development. The report, 'Show me the money! The Behavioural Science of Reward', discusses how money may not be the straightforward workplace motivator we expect, and highlights how alternative approaches to reward may be more effective in increasing employees' intrinsic motivation to succeed.
