My visit to the 25th ISSA/Interclean exhibition in Amsterdam started with a lesson: when flying, always use a large enough handbag – one that can carry the laptop but still be zipped up. For this trip I’d opted for a smaller than usual bag, which fell over during take-off and shot my passport under my seat. It’s all very well feeling pleased that you’ve been one of the first off the plane and may well make it to the front of the taxi queue before your fellow travellers, but completely useless when you can’t get through passport control…

I’m not sure who will have been most embarrassed: me emptying my bag in full view of the rest of those who’d flown out from Gatwick - clearly having lost that important document, or John Austen having to claim a very girly suitcase from the carousel, as I waited with other potential ‘undesirables’ at the security desk for my passport to be found by the cleaners and brought to me!

Consequently, we were at the back of the queue for taxis and now even behind the Birmingham flight passengers; although chatting to our friends Hannah and Bal from Unger while queuing and during our cab ride, took our minds off the fact that we were running late for the show and would be missing the Innovation Awards ceremony.

Luckily the very able marketing team from Amsterdam RAI have produced a press release about the event, which means we are able to bring you the results of the Awards…

Karcher’s B60/10C MopVac wins ISSA/Interclean Amsterdam Innovation Award 2014

* kaercher-B6010.jpg
The B60/10C MopVac from Karcher was found by the international team of judges, to have filled the gap between the mop & bucket and scrubber dryer.
more

Machines, accessories and components

* wetrok-mambo.jpgCategory winner: Wetrok - Wetrok Discomatic Mambo – The compact size of this 30-litre scrubber dryer makes it extremely manoeuverable and suitable for a wide range of new applications. The fact that it is powered by a lithium-ion battery gives it a run time that is four times longer than a conventional lead battery. The water feed can be regulated from the control panel and to make operator training even simpler, there are only four control buttons.

Equipment/tools for cleaning, care and safety

Category and overall winner: Kärcher - B60/10C MopVac

* sofidel-biotech.jpgFinalist: Sofidel – Biotech is a biologically active toilet tissue, containing microorganisms that produce enzymes on contact with water. These enzymes feed on the dirt in pipes in sewers, helping to reduce the need for cleaning.

Finalist: Tennant Europe – Orbio os3 is a unit that allows customers to generate their own cleaning and disinfecting solutions on-site – created through water electrolysis and using salt – so reducing conventional chemical use.

The Amsterdam Innovation Award supports African water project

The proceedings from the competition entrants’ registration fees are donated to the African Medical & Research Foundation (AMREF) Flying Doctors, and their project ‘Sustainable Water Access for the Masai in Kajiado, Kenya’. This project aims at providing the local community with better access to clean drinking water and aims to decrease water sanitation and hygiene related diseases.

Getting around

We – and those we’ve spoken to - feel the show’s layout, with dedicated areas that keep similar products together (so, for example, someone looking for washroom cleaning & hygiene solutions knows where to head when entering the RAI) is working very well. This year there are dedicated areas for high pressure cleaning, steam cleaning, management & mobility solutions and washroom solutions, as well as an area set out for those products that made the finals of the Innovation Awards.

These areas are - cleverly, colour coded in the floorplans which are freely available at the entrances to the halls. I am finding these floorplans much easier to use than the old ones, which – because of the sheer size of the show – had in previous years been run over several pages of the catalogues. This new format is much easier to work with and makes orientation easier in terms of both seeing how the different halls link together and being able to read what you need to without a magnifying glass!

The Outdoor Demo Show: really bringing outdoor cleaning to life

* Twist-Eco-Car-Wash.jpgOne thing we’ve been guilty of in the past – and which no doubt you may identity with, is that we’re so keen to get into the show that we often walk past the outdoor demonstration area without stopping to see what’s going on…

Simplifying compliance with complicated regulations

* CleanFM2.jpgSelden research had hinted that it was using the show to launch something pretty spectacular but had managed to keep everything really quiet and there was nothing on the company’s website to indicate what it would be, so it was with eager anticipation that we stepped onto the stand.

People so often say there is little that’s new in cleaning but we often come across some real innovation. I have to admit that on this occasion though, once Mark Woodhead had given his presentation, my response was: “If I don’t see anything else that’s new at this exhibition, what you’ve just shown us has made our visit to Amsterdam worthwhile.” Selden’s new service is absolutely brilliant and I can’t imagine anyone not being impressed by it.

Squeegee magic

* Moermann.jpgMoerman’s Sofie Landuyt showed us a number of innovations being unveiled at the show, including a selection of squeegees which, via a wheel on the squeegee head, can be easily adjusted in angle to suit both the user and the shape of the surface being cleaned.

They can then be locked in place or left to move freely, to suit the user’s needs and the surface being cleaned. The angle at which the squeegee sits upon the surface is also easily adjustable, as is where the squeegee sits on the pole (from left to right). All of them twist easily into whichever handle suits the job in hand.

An abundance of brushes available worldwide

* TVH.jpgOur picture shows Meindert de Boer, Business Development Advisor at TVH, with just a tiny selection of the company’s brushes. Behind our photographer are two much bigger brushes, which are used on road sweepers and fork lift trucks.

The company, which has customers in 172 countries, has two main business activities: Parts & Accessories and Rental & Equipment.

A welcome return and a novel machine

* Victor.jpgMaking a welcome return after too long an absence from this show, is British manufacturer Dowding & Plummer and its Victor floor cleaning machines. Mention this manufacturer and its brand to anyone who’s been in the industry for any time and they will immediately picture a rotary floor cleaning machine, so what surprised us was rectangular shape of the machines on display (as you can see for yourself in our image which also features the Managing Director Barney Dowding.
