Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! Next week John and I fly out to Amsterdam to visit the ISSA/Interclean exhibition, which is taking place at the Amsterdam RAI from 6th – 9th May. This show is always enormous and we understand from the organisers that this time around it’s going to be even bigger and better. I always complain that four days doesn’t give us enough time to see all that’s on offer – so goodness only knows how we’ll get round to everyone – but we will do our best! As we have done for the past five shows in the series, we’ll be bringing you a flavour of the event, together with news on the awards winners and many of the new products and innovations we discover, in our Show Daily. If you’ve never visited this show before and are wondering whether or not to attend, our advice would be to start planning your trip now – it really is something that’s not to be missed if you have the time to spare and the budget. Do make sure you register in advance though, as there are always queues at the turnstiles. And if you see us, do come and say ‘hello’, won’t you? Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine

A new report by the World Health Organisation (WHO)-its first to look at antimicrobial resistance, including antibiotic resistance, globally-reveals that this serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country.
Antibiotic resistance-when bacteria change so antibiotics no longer work in people who need them to treat infections-is now a major threat to public health and we need to do everything we can to prevent the spread of infection. Inteb calls for tighter Legionella regulation Low energy, sustainability and commercial property compliance consultancy, Inteb, is calling for Legionella testing to be made compulsory, as the fight against the bacteria hots up. Inteb says the possible mutation of the Legionella bacteria that has been noted, which allows it to survive at temperatures up to 61 degrees C, is one reason to tighten up the law. It adds that the temptation for organisations to lower the temperatures at which they are heating water, to save electricity, is another reason to introduce tighter regulation. Cleaning Expo Scotland 2014 gets the 'Yes' vote! Scotland is featuring regularly on news bulletins and in the Press, thanks to the historic referendum taking place on 18th September 2014, on whether or not to become an independent country. How will the people vote: 'Yes', or 'No'? One thing we know people are saying 'Yes' to is Cleaning Expo Scotland, which is taking place just a couple of weeks before the referendum, on 3th and 4th September, at Glasgow's SECC. With stand space almost sold out and the numbers of visitors who have pre-registered to attend, growing daily, the enthusiasm surrounding this new event is becoming infectious! Survey results show training and infrastructure issues wreck 'distributed leadership' New research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, the professional body for Human Resources and people development, has found that rigid organisational hierarchies are one of the main barriers to improving management and leadership skills in today's workplaces.
Many employees without formal managerial responsibility are now expected to own the organisation's agenda, lead from the front line and do 'the right thing' for the customer and for their employer - an approach known as 'distributed leadership' - but poorly targeted training and restrictive organisational structures are getting in the way. Many companies need hot water in their production processes. An innovative system from Dresden (Germany) based DAS Environmental Expert GmbH now facilitates heat transfer from wastewater to process water. This helps to optimise the temperatures in the water flows, which significantly increases efficiency with regard to both energy usage and wastewater treatment. Moirans shows the lighter side of hazards RPC Emballages Moirans has launched what is believed to be the first UN certified 20 litre container to weigh just 700g. The new 320 range, blow moulded in HDPE, is part of an ongoing enhancement programme at the site which over the years has seen the weight of its 20 litre UN container reduced from 900g to first 800g and now 700g.
Key to the success of this project has been RPC's ability to reduce the amount of material required to manufacture the container, while ensuring that it retains the necessary robustness and strength to safely handle and transport hazardous products. Contractor offers tips on choosing the right commercial cleaning company A free guide, with five key steps to choosing a reliable and professional commercial cleaning organisation, has been launched by commercial cleaning and disaster restoration specialist, ServiceMaster Clean.
"Too often, individuals without specialist training are given the task of cleaning," argues the company. "Boardroom carpets, reception area hard floors and upholstered sofas should be regularly and professionally cleaned to give a positive message about the quality of your company. Choosing the right cleaning provider makes economic sense, as appropriate care and treatment will lengthen the serviceable life of these surfaces. So what issues need to be considered when sourcing a reliable and professional contract cleaner?" Refreshing new type of cleaning industry trade show takes place later this month We don't have all the details yet, but we've been talking to the organiser of a new type of tradeshow, taking place on Saturday, 17th May 2014, in Bridport, Dorset. Mark Munro tells us that the WCP Tradeshow / Van Festival, is attracting exhibitors that we'd normally expect to see at some of the larger exhibitions - companies such as Window Cleaners' Warehouse, Unger, Sebo, FaceLift, Aquadapter, HydraMaster, Alltec Network and many more. And the Van Festival is not what you might expect either... many industry operators have to kit their vans out with products and equipment and the idea is that those attending the show throw the doors of their work vans open to other visitors, to share ideas and experiences on what works well and what doesn't. Now that's what we call networking! The Cleanzine Archive Search We keep an extensive archive of news stories and product information that have featured in past issues of The Cleanzine.
