Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! Sorry for the late-ish arrival of this broadcast but John and I have only just returned from a wonderful few days at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham wearing our KBzine hats, closely examining (and often drooling over) the very latest in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and associated appliances and equipment. I say we were wearing our KBzine hats but it soon became clear that we still had our Cleanzine hats tucked away somewhere close… “How easy would that be to clean?” we’d often ask one another, while I said: “Just imagine that surface after a couple of months if you fry a lot!” and: “I wouldn’t fancy trying to clean that if someone slopped a cup of coffee over it…” Yes – cleaning is never too far away from our hearts and the extra work ‘design over substance’ can create is really quite frightening. Finally – I do not have a new job! Professional networking/social media site LinkedIn, had, during an upgrade, removed some of my profile information and a couple of weeks back I reinserted it. This has set off a prompt to my connections to congratulate me on my new job - which some of you have done. John and I have now been producing Cleanzine together for a little over 12 years and what started as a UK circulation of just a few thousand, has now grown to a global circulation of more than 100,000 readers. This is – incredibly - our 613th issue and there will be many, many more to come! Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine You can also follow us on Twitter @cleanzine Yours, This Week's News
Consumers disappointed with cleanliness and disinfection practices P&G Professional has this week revealed the results of a major European study into public attitudes and perceptions of cleanliness and disinfection standards in hospitality establishments and care homes in the UK, France and Germany. In the first cross-sector look at cleanliness and disinfection practices across Europe this year, the survey uncovered the truth that there is a disconnect between what business owners are doing in terms of cleaning and disinfection practices and what consumers expect. Easyfairs (Facilities Management and Maintec) and Western Business Exhibitions (The Health & Safety Event), organisers of these co-located events taking place at the NEC in Birmingham next week, have announced that their events will be joined by a further co-location in 2015 - a brand new cleaning show called Cleaning Expo 2015. This decision by Fairweather Events, organiser of Cleaning Expo, is a major endorsement for the three other shows and recognises the growing powerbase of facilities, property and estate managers, production and plant managers, maintenance, health & safety professionals from outside London, which they attract. How do latest EU Regulatory Laws affect cleaning products market? Chemicals are arguably the main element and driving force of EU product regulation which, in turn, influences the marketing of products in the EU and worldwide. Although general chemical legislation (REACH or CLP) is well understood and implemented by many companies within the EU, there are some ongoing restrictions and authorisation requirements which may be more difficult for companies to get to grips with. So, what are the latest developments in EU regulatory law, and how do they impact the cleaning products industry? Ales Bartl is an Associate at McKenna Long & Aldridge, specialising in EU product regulatory law and particularly in chemicals legislation. He is also the leader of this year's Cleaning Products Europe pre-conference workshop. Amano Pioneer Eclipse reaches agreement to purchase Clarke American Sanders Amano Pioneer Eclipse announced last week that it has entered into an agreement to purchase Clarke American Sanders from Nilfisk-Advance.
The agreement gives Amano Pioneer Eclipse a market leading position in the wood floorcare industry. The acquisition also strengthens the core floorcare technology business of Amano Pioneer Eclipse by opening new sales channels for existing product lines. Lean and green office cleaning delivers major savings for all concerned Cleanliness in the workplace not only reflects an organisation's culture and values; it can also deliver many tangible benefits, including improved employee health, better staff morale, increased productivity and enhanced customer satisfaction levels.
A new report: 'Go lean and green to save time and money', offers insights into the importance of a clean workplace and includes examples of how such a strategy can improve environmental impact, reduce costs and add to the bottom line. Greener retail facilities and redevelopments create opportunities for FM providers The mature, yet highly fragmented Australian facilities management market for retail, wholesale and warehousing, is likely to find new opportunities in the trend toward more sustainable facilities and redevelopments or extensions. While new construction activity remains subdued, the opportunity to offer bundled or integrated services represents a significant untapped market.
Recent analysis from Frost & Sullivan: 'Strategic Analysis of Facilities Management in Retail, Wholesale and Warehousing - Australia', finds that market revenues are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 0.8% over the period 2012 to 2019. Veltia's New Generation Hand Dryer: technologically advanced Veltia's V7 New Generation Hand Dryer has a number of interesting features and is based on a patented system which, says the manufacturer, make it the most exclusive hand dryer on the market. It's fast too - using 300 nozzles to produce high speed micro-currents of 100% pre-filtered (and thus clean) air rather than the more usual hot air that can dry out the skin.
This gives a pleasant massage while drying the hands completely, in a process that takes just 10 - 15 seconds and which also means that there is no risk of burning the user because nothing on the unit ever gets hot. Further, the design of the dryer prevents the user and the surrounding area from being splashed with water. Any water that comes off the hands is instead collected in a tank at the bottom of the dryer. GV Health supports World Kidney Day GV Health is helping to raise awareness of kidney disease. It is joining in with purple-themed activities on World Kidney Day, 13th March 2014, and donating 15% from all purple cytotoxic bag sales made in March to Kidney Research UK.

In 2013, the first time the event took place, over £25,000 was raised with over 500 schools, companies and community groups taking part. New job opportunities as commercial cleaning company expands Cambridge operations Contract and specialist cleaning company, Monthind, is expanding its contracts in the Cambridgeshire area and creating a number of new job opportunities across all sectors of the company's operations. Monthind Clean has a strong foothold across East Anglia, being one of the region's leading independent contract cleaning companies. DuPont and Procter & Gamble Company are the joint winners of the 2014 Sustainable Bio Award for Bio-Based Product Innovation of the Year. The two companies were recognised this week at the 2014 World Bio Markets Conference in Amsterdam for their pioneering work to build a new enzyme technology that delivers better cleaning power at lower wash temperatures.
This innovative engineering method discovered an optimal enzyme, also known as a protease, which matches the performance of detergent at 60°F (15.5°C) as the previous generation of product at 90°F (32.2°C). New university scholarship encourages excellence in cleaning and infection control The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners is supporting and encouraging the cleaning professionals of tomorrow in partnership with the University of Northampton, with the donation of the John Butler Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners Endowed Scholarship, in memory of John Butler, who was a member of the WCEC and husband of past Master Mrs Butler.

Spring cleaning time... for cleaning firms Spring is the traditional time for having a clear-out – and Steve Clarke says that cleaning firms, like other van users, should begin with their refuelling. Marketing manager for The Fuelcard People, a Fuel Card Group company, he insists that it makes sense. “Some businesses have been using the same fuel cards for years, without ever taking a real look at the alternatives. Some, unbelievably, are happy to pay pump prices. For anything else they buy, from tyres to teabags, they shop around for bargains. You would think that they would be equally keen on keeping down the cost of refuelling.” Greyland reaches latest milestone - 15 years!
