Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

There's much talk about the UK Government reinstating weekly bin collections but I reckon that this will be a mistake - well certainly for those councils that provide secure wheelie bins, as opposed to plastic refuse sacks that are so easily ripped open by animals.

Over the two years or so that my non-food waste has been collected fortnightly, I have managed perfectly well - although it does require extra care when it comes to choosing what needs to go into which bin...

You're actually forced to recycle as the general waste bin won't have enough space in it unless you do. The one bin that seems to get most full is that which takes empty packaging in the form of plastics and cardboards - and it bothers me that if weekly collections were reinstated people might be less diligent about recycling these items, as it would be easier to pop them in with the general waste instead of trying to fit them into the correct recycling bin.
An item in 'This Week's News' shows just why we should embrace recycling and greener fuels with open arms...

A waste recycling company has opened a compressed natural gas fuelling station in Camden and this clean-burning, environmentally-friendly fuel is being sold to commercial fleets as well as individuals with CNG-equipped vehicles, at prices typically one-third below the cost of gasoline (petrol) and diesel.

There are many benefits to the environment and with petrol prices hovering around £1.38/litre in the UK and food waste now being easily converted into fuel, the news that we might one day be able to run our vehicles cleanly and inexpensively on the stuff, just adds to the incentive to recycle more, rather than less, doesn't it?

Yours,

Cleaners paid too little, say Britons

A report by a leading think-tank has revealed that two-thirds of Britons would support government action to increase the wages of low-paid workers such as cleaners.

The report, produced by the Institute for Public Policy Research, concludes that government, business and trade unions should collude to make pay fairer for low-paid workers and reveals strong public opposition for the growing gap in pay between the top and bottom rungs within organisations.

Waste Management opens first public compressed natural gas fueling station in Camden

Waste Management of New Jersey celebrated the grand opening of the first public-access compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelling station in Camden yesterday and announced plans to convert its regional fleet to this clean-burning, environmentally-friendly fuel.

The new 'Clean N' Green Fuel' public fuelling station, to be operated by PetroCard, is the first such facility in Camden County and will sell CNG to commercial fleets as well as individuals with CNG-equipped vehicles, at prices typically one-third below the cost of gasoline and diesel. In addition to cost savings, the US Department of Energy estimates that the use of CNG reduces particulate matter emissions by 86%, carbon monoxide emissions by 80%, nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 32% and greenhouse emissions by 25%. Sebo a red carpet contender, says top manufacturer

Carpet manufacturer Heckmondwike FB, a leading manufacturer of heavy contract fibre bonded carpet and carpet tiles, recommends that Sebo vacuum cleaners are used to get the best performance and life expectancy from its carpets.

Abby Chandler, Marketing Manager at Heckmondwike FB, explains: "To maximise Supacord's aesthetic appeal, performance and life expectancy, it is important to vacuum every day with a twin-motored upright vacuum cleaner. If left to build up, the particles of dirt are much harder to remove and can damage the fibre structure and decrease the life of the carpet.

Access to plastics recycling more widespread than previously believed

A study released on Tuesday by Moore Recycling Associates, found that a much larger portion of the US population has ready access to recycle commonly used plastics than previously believed. Specifically the study, 'Plastics Recycling Collection: National Reach Study', found that 94% of Americans have access to recycle plastic bottles and 40% of the population also can recycle other types of plastic containers, such as yogurt cups, dairy tubs and lids.

Although the study surveyed nearly 2,500 communities across the US, it found that within the 100 largest cities, the percentage of the population with access to recycle plastic containers in addition to bottles has nearly doubled since 2008.

Three men taken ill after cleaning toilets

As if we ever need reminding that even routine cleaning can sometimes be a dangerous job, three men, aged 23, 57 and 64, were taken into hospital as a precaution last week, after two of them suffered breathing difficulties as a result of using a chemical to clean toilets at the Imperial Docks at Leith, near Edinburgh.

According to a BBC report, the trio had been using an acid cleaner in a toilet block when one of them began to feel unwell. He was being treated at the scene for respiratory problems when his colleague also appeared to be overcome by the fumes.

All three were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a precaution.

The chemical cleaner was moved outside and the toilet block was aired out.
