Cleaners and those involved in waste management have once again been highlighted as an at-risk group when it comes to occupational cancer as a result of exposure to carcinogens in cleaning products – this time in a report just published by the European Agency for Safety & Health at Work.
Said to be some 90% less corrosive than rock salt, it is non-toxic to vegetation and grass, it minimises rust damage and won't tread into and harm carpets. It is also non-harmful to wildlife.
While better healthcare infrastructure and increasing demand for HAI control products mean that North America and Europe are dominating the global hospital-acquired infection control market, Asia and Latin America are expected to experience high growth rate due to an increase in the demand for these products and the increasing demand for better healthcare facilities in these regions. So says newly published research from Persistence Market Research.

It wasn’t through choice that I found myself at the local supermarket on New Year’s Day but a house full of people suffering from heavy colds and flu over the festive period meant that we were in dire need of both toilet tissue and facial tissues.
Odd looks from a fellow shopper made me realise that I was muttering to myself, so I quickly told her that no, I hadn’t been drinking at such an early hour, but was simply trying to work out which of the bumper packs of toilet tissue provided the best value.
I explained that the own brand pack – normally the best choice - contained four more rolls than the branded pack which was ‘on special’, but that it wasn’t the number of rolls that made the difference, but the total number of sheets of tissue in the pack. This was what I was working out and before you scoff, if you knew just how much toilet tissue we get through in my household, you’ll understand that over the year, clever choices really do make a difference!
We reached the conclusion that the branded pack would, on this occasion, be the better buy since it contained on average, an extra 40 sheets of tissue per roll and was of comparable quality to the own brand version. My new friend assured me she’d be making calculations in future too.
Naturally I chuckled when I received a press release this week, announcing that the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association’s Soft Tissue Accreditation Scheme is attracting new members. If I – as an individual – am aware that making informed toilet tissue purchasing decisions can make a difference when it comes to balancing budgets, then those tasked with making those decisions on behalf of multiple facilities, or contractors needing to supply valuable clients, will need to be equally astute. It’s clear from the release that word is getting around that with members of this scheme, you at least know you’re getting what you’re paying for!

The Cleaning & Support Services Association is to terminate its role within the Building Futures Group - the organisation formed less than a year ago by the merging of Asset Skills, the Facilities Management Association and the CSSA itself.
A joint statement from the Chair of the CSSA and the Chair of The Building Futures Group, released yesterday, says:
The more we learn about the challenges of responding to the Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa, the easier it becomes to discern parallels to the HIV epidemic - another health crisis , which we've been battling for over 30 years now. The HIV response has some valuable lessons for the way we confront the disease in general, particularly in the workplace. Here's an example.
Membership of the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers' Association's Soft Tissue Manufacturing Standards Accreditation Scheme has increased by three during a year in which the rigour of the Scheme has been enhanced, according to Mike Stubbs, Chairman of the Scheme's governing Panel.
Mike gave his Annual Report to the CHSA's Soft Tissue Accreditation Schemes Annual General Meeting which was held just prior to the Christmas holidays, saying:
The Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards programme is now open for entries. The awards are designed to provide contract cleaners and in-house cleaning teams the chance to showcase the excellent work undertaken in the cleaning industry.
Founded in 1991, the bi-annual awards have grown to become the industry's most illustrious event, attended by over 500 representatives from the cleaning and FM industries. 2015 will see the event move to a new venue, The London Hilton Park Lane, with over 600 guests expected to attend the event on Friday 23rd October, hosted by comedian and actor, Jon Culshaw, with one of Britain's most famous voices, Alan Dedicoat, as Master of Ceremonies.
The Building Futures Group has declared its intention to produce its public affairs strategy as the UK begins to prepare for the upcoming General Election. The Group will be producing the first UK Manifesto that specifically focusses on the facilities management industry.
This is the latest initiative in the Group's drive to ensure that the massive contribution FM makes to the UK economy, essential services and society is understood and recognised by future policy makers, end users and public alike.
London Gatwick Airport has wiped the floor with one of its biggest facilities management problems by using 'melt and blast' technology to clean hundreds of thousands of pieces of chewing gum from terminal walkways.
The UK's second busiest airport wanted to bring its external public areas leading to terminal buildings up to the same World Class standard as those inside. To achieve this, it commissioned CleanSafe Services to use a specialist technique that rapidly heats the chewing gum and removes it from the floor with a jet of water at 1,250 pounds per square inch.
Recycling giant bpi.recycled products is moving into a new market, with its first sacks contract in France. The UK manufacturer is to supply France's Saumur Council with its EN13592 accredited mixed-waste sacks.
The new contract is for the collection of selected waste streams including plastic bottles, metal packaging, cardboard cartons and drinks containers.
Within the prison service 'dirty protests' are a rare occurrence, but when they happen, they disrupt the routine of the prison care, separation and hospital units, which are usually where these types of protests happen.
They may happen because the prisoner is protesting about a particular issue; however, sadly, it may be due to more serious issues linked to the prisoner's mental health. When these protests happen, the prison has a duty of care to relocate the prisoner to a clean cell. The contaminated cell is then cordoned off until it can be cleaned.
A new year is considered the time for 'new beginnings' and keeping with that tradition, Energic Plus, the renowned supplier of battery chargers and accessories for batteries used in industrial applications, has launched a new website.
"The old website was in dire need of renewal and was no longer representative for the extensive range!" confesses manufacturer TVH.
January is traditionally the time of year that people flock to their local gym in an attempt to work off the excesses of Christmas, which means the cleaner's job becomes an even more difficult one. Designed to eliminate oily residue, Betco's Dust Mop Treatment is water-based and compatible with all gym and floor finishes.
MITIE has been awarded a three year contract with Marie Curie Cancer Care to provide cleaning and laundry services to the charity’s West Midlands Hospice and cleaning, laundry and hostess service to Cardiff & The Vale Hospice.
Each year Marie Curie provides free nursing care to terminally ill people and emotional support for their families in their own homes or in the charity’s nine hospices. MITIE’ss Environmental + healthcare team will now be dedicated to supporting them in two of these hospices, by providing specialist cleaning, domestic and patient dining services.
