Cleaning the London Olympic village has finally made the headlines but not in the way I'd expected it to. "10 to a room and one shower for 75 people: inside the 'slum' camp for Olympic cleaners" was the headline in an issue of the Mail Online this week and judging by the images that accompanied the story, the accommodation looks (from the outside at least) somewhat like a concentration camp, with the huts crammed so close together that there will be little chance of any sunlight (if there's any about!) finding its way inside... All very miserable for those who'll have to live there during the Games, I feel. After all, these are people we're talking about and I've seen horses housed in stables that are larger than these rooms! Then you read that most of the cleaners have been recruited from overseas and when you consider that the latest figures show that UK unemployment is up yet again, it really doesn't make any sense at all, does it? You can read the article at www.dailymail.co.uk and I'd love to receive your comments! And talking of comments, i-clean's Mike Boxall has an interesting and well-researched theory on litter picking in our schools, following my rant in last week's leader. You can read it below, together with John Austen's take on things. Finally, do please accept our apologies for an item that managed to find its way into last week's issue under the headline: 'DMG team up with Matrix in Scotland'. Rather than being a finished story, this was actually our notes and it did neither company (nor indeed us!) any favours. The finished article (below) is headed up 'DMG teams up with Matrix in Scotland to sell steam cleaning equipment', and please make sure you read it so you can stay up-to-date with what's going on there. We have Mail: School litter picking With reference to your comment about the high school litter picking, you may be interested to know that following numerous reviews we've done in educational environments, we're increasingly seeing the effects of what others refer to as the 'broken windows theory'... That is, the longer litter remains on the floor, then the more likely it will be that others will drop litter. Owner cloning, dead fish and dead companies by Ed Selkow
