Speaking at Waste & Resources Action Programme's annual conference last week, Chief Executive Dr Liz Goodwin published results of the organisation's work over the past three years and set out its future agenda.

She revealed that WRAP has met all its published major targets, having helped keep 11 million tonnes of waste out of landfill, avoid 5.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions and generate £2bn of benefits to the UK economy, including £1.8bn of cost savings.

As an important part of the information reporting on progress in the last three years, WRAP published new research which showed a sharp fall in household food waste by 13% but showed we still throw away edible food worth £12bn a year.

Most British consumers (89%) are likely to tell the organisations they do business with if they receive poor service, yet almost half (44%) do not believe they take notice of, or really care about, the feedback shared, according to a study published this week by the Customer Contact Association and sponsored by Verint Systems.

Fiberweb has announced that it and its wholly-owned subsidiary, Fiberweb Holdings, has entered into binding agreements for the sale of the hygiene business to Brazilian-based company Petropar for US$286 million (approximately £179 million).

Hygiene issues at Indian hospital exacerbated by huge volume of visitors

The cleaning programme at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, in the large eastern Indian city of Guwahati, is being severely disrupted by the huge volume of visitors - estimated at some 2000 - 3000 each day with many staying overnight to be with their loved ones. This is leading to a rapid spread of infection as many of these visitors ignore the rules and regulations regarding cleanliness and hygiene.

Did you know... Brightwell organises free technical training sessions?

Brightwell Dispensers organises regular in-house technical training sessions at its Newhaven HQ for its laundry and dishwashing equipment. The sessions usually last a full day, from 09.00 - 16.00 and cover all aspects of the units and accessories, from computer programming and dishwash programming, to correct and beneficial usage of accessories. And at the end of the day's training, the participants receive a certificate of training.

Leeds Castle drives for sustainability

Management and staff at Leeds Castle have been making great progress in developing the venue's waste management procedures, with a view to increasing recycling rates and minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill as a result of the castle's day-to-day operations.

The sustainability drive began in April 2010, with a clear target to achieve zero waste to landfill for the site.

* Francisco-Duarte.jpgFrancisco Duarte, 50, a director at Principle Cleaning Services for 22 years, passed away peacefully at home on 19th November following a long battle with cancer.

Douglas Cooke, Chief Executive of Principle, writes:

"Francisco played a major role in helping to develop and grow the company by ensuring extremely high standards of quality and customer service. He was a great organiser, loyal and totally dedicated to improving the cleaning industry for both the staff and the company's clients.

"He leaves behind his wife Dulcie and two children and will be sorely missed by us all."

OCS achieves sparkling results in Asset Skills Team Clean Challenge Awards

* OCS-Team-Clean-Challenge-winning-supervisor.jpgTwo OCS cleaning teams have achieved sparkling results in this year's Asset Skills Team Clean Challenge Awards. After a raft of fiercely contested regional heats and the competition final in Birmingham, the OCS team at Chepstow Hospital scooped second place, while the company's team at Aegon in Edinburgh achieved third place. Bill Ochs from Aegon, Edinburgh, was also awarded Best Supervisor for Scotland.

IICRC (The Clean Trust) publishes list of forthcoming courses

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning & Restoration Certification (which as we reported in a recent issue of Cleanzine, is currently being rebranded to become 'The Clean Trust') has published its latest schedule of training and certification courses.

Courses taking place at various locations around the UK during November, include 'Water Restoration Technician', 'Stone, Masonry & Ceramic Tile Cleaning Technician' and 'Applied Structural Drying Technician', although the list includes many other specialist courses being held over the coming months.
