Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 132 countries worldwide!
This will be the last broadcast issue of Cleanzine until 1st September as John and I are taking time out for some IT housekeeping and back office work. I leave my desk for now with a heavy heart knowing that the world is watching us in England, no doubt as horrified as the majority of us here are, about the rioting that has spread to many parts of the country Cleaning (and clearing up) is a difficult enough job to do at the best of times but when the cleaning involves tons of deliberately broken glass and burnt out cars and buildings, it takes on a whole new aspect. I had spent the last couple of days wondering how on earth our cleaning teams were going to cope when I saw on the news that several of the 'nicer' citizens of London had used social networking - so damned for the part it played in gathering the rioters to do their dirty deeds - to set up groups that would summon other decent people to start the clean up. Our picture - courtesy of the BBC - shows one of these groups greeting London Mayor Boris Johnson, as he arrives; broom in hand, to help. I pray that when I return, things are back to normal and that the only cleaning needed, is of the more general sort. Do please keep your news coming in over the next couple of weeks as we will be checking our emails and do keep an eye on our website as we'll post any major breaking news as it happens. Wherever you are in the world, stay safe and if you're taking a break of any sort, have fun and try and make the most of it! Yours, This Week's News
Brightwell and All Care distribution alliance Following several years of successful trading and market development together, Brightwell Dispensers and All Care met on July 1st 2011 to sign their first exclusive agreement, marking day one of their significant, promising alliance. Based in the Netherlands, All Care is now the sole representative for UK manufacturer Brightwell's washroom products across Benelux and Germanic countries. Jangro, the UK's largest network of independently owned janitorial companies with 41 in the UK, Ireland and the Isle of Man, always prides itself in 'going the extra mile' for its customers. Last winter when the snow was building into 20' drifts, Jangro Member MacGregor Industrial Supplies of Inverness received a call for a new carpet steam cleaner from the Ptarmigan Restaurant in the Visitor Centre of Cairngorms Mountain Ski Centre. Train windows, a breakthrough (not literally!) For as long as trains have had windows, there have been problems with both getting them clean and keeping them clean. Say to anybody the words 'train windows' and their immediate response is "Dirty." After a lot of development and testing there is now a simple, but effective solution that does not require outside contractors. It is a 'spin off' from the Ship's Bridge Window technology from Kleentec Marine. T: Mark on 01772 512343 BTA Conference Wednesday 21st September There has never been a more important time to discuss toilets! The British Toilet Association needs your input! The BTA will be returning to The Stratford Hotel at Stratford upon Avon for its annual conference and AGM (members only AGM). The agenda will include topics to stimulate discussion and find solutions to the real issues that the impact of the current economic situation is producing for public toilet providers: No-Water Urinals: survey reveals misconceptions A July 2011 survey by Waterless Co., manufacturer of no-water urinal systems and related washoom products, asked some 500 facilities managers how waterless urinals compare to traditional urinals. The seven-question survey touched upon cleaning and maintenance issues and how fast a no-water system pays for itself due to reduced water and sewer charges. According to the replies, 40% believed a no-water unit costs more than a water-using urinal. Another 40% believed the costs "were about the same," and 20% said they were less. Corporate responsibility in a harsher business landscape Karen James, commercial manager at Lime, the total waste division of the PHS Group, discusses how contract cleaning services are now enhancing their offering to include recycling services. So many aspects of business life are about getting the balance right; income and expenditure; dynamism and circumspection. Night-time cleaning to end rubbish nightmare Over the next three months, a small army of uniformed workers will be spending the nights cleaning the streets of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India, as part of an initiative by the ancient city's Municipal Corporation to solve its rubbish collection problems. Recycling revolution grows in the US Athens, GA-based Product Policy Institute announced last week that it has hired a leading environmental advocate to expand PPI's reach in growing the rising movement for producer responsibility for recycling, currently sweeping the US. Certified pros protect catering industry as insurers get tough on greasy ductwork The extreme fire risk of uncleaned grease extract systems in buildings with catering facilities has been highlighted profusely by the Fire Authority, but it is the refusal of insurance companies to pay out and hefty fines that have brought the matter to the industry's attention. Heading to the beach this Summer? Water at nearly all Europe's coastal and inland bathing sites is clean enough to bathe and swim in, despite a slight decrease in quality. You can rest easy knowing that 92% of beaches and 90% of rivers and lakes meet the EU's minimum standards for cleanliness. The findings - from the European Environment Agency's annual bathing water report - are based on regular samples taken from more than 21,000 coastal and inland bathing sites across Europe.
