Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news

Read by industry professionals in 132 countries worldwide!

I was lucky enough to have been a guest at the Cleaning & Support Services Association's Annual Luncheon at London's newly refurbished Savoy Hotel last week (see our report, below, together with feedback regarding the AGM). While this event and others like it are, effectively, fun social occasions, the opportunities they provide for that all-important networking, are invaluable.

One of the many people I spoke with at the event was Mike Bone, who heads up the British Toilet Association and Loo of the Year Awards. Mike told me that he's looking for some more sponsors for the Awards and I was surprised at how little this costs, for those keen to get their company logo seen all over the world and show support for such a great initiative. If I was running a company involved in washroom hygiene in any way, this is something I'd certainly do! I was surprised to learn that sponsorship packages start at just £1,000.

"Some of the leading FM and cleaning companies enter their clients' loos in the Awards," said Mike. "In 2010 these included Carlisle Cleaning, Dougland, ISS, Mitie, Resource, TC Contractors and Wettons.

"They recognise the Loo of the Year Awards as a proven, cost effective and independent annual assessment of the standard of their toilet provision management and receive proper recognition through our annual grading scheme.

"Good loos are proven to be good for business."

I couldn't agree more!

If you're smart enough not to want to miss out on a great opportunity to sponsor these awards,
E: [email protected] or phone 01403 258779 for details.

Further to my recent leader regarding bin collections and doorstep recycling, here are the first of your comments on the matter, including one from John Austen who clearly isn't looked after by his council in Kent as well as I am in Surrey!

Annual recruitment survey finds return of war for talent and huge skills gaps in UK

Employers struggling to fill vacancies, are being inundated with unsuitable candidates, while talented individuals are staying put, concluding that the grass is greener on their own side of the fence in these volatile economic times. These are the top line findings from the annual Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development Resourcing & Talent Planning survey, produced in partnership with Hays.

Three quarters (73%) of organisations have highlighted an increase in the number of unsuitable candidates for job vacancies, fuelled by the sheer weight of application numbers due to high levels of unemployment. However, more than half of employers (52%) believe that competition for talent is even greater, compared to 41% and 20% in 2010 and 2009 respectively.

Three men taken ill after cleaning toilets

As if we ever need reminding that even routine cleaning can sometimes be a dangerous job, three men, aged 23, 57 and 64, were taken into hospital as a precaution last week, after two of them suffered breathing difficulties as a result of using a chemical to clean toilets at the Imperial Docks at Leith, near Edinburgh.

According to a BBC report, the trio had been using an acid cleaner in a toilet block when one of them began to feel unwell. He was being treated at the scene for respiratory problems when his colleague also appeared to be overcome by the fumes.

All three were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a precaution.

The chemical cleaner was moved outside and the toilet block was aired out.
