SOAPBOX: Mental Health Awareness Week

* SOAPBOX_TOMMY-TAYLOR.jpegTommy Taylor, director at T Taylor Solutions, writes...

“Mental Health Awareness Week, (11th - 17th May) is an important reminder that mental health affects every industry - including cleaning and facilities management.

The cleaning sector is often physically demanding, emotionally draining, and - at times, isolating. Many operatives work unsociable hours, travel long distances, work alone and carry out essential tasks without recognition from the people around them.

Yet despite being one of the industries that keeps buildings, workplaces and public spaces safe and operational, conversations around mental health in cleaning still do not happen enough.

The reality is that behind every uniform is a person who may be dealing with stress, anxiety, financial pressure, family concerns or loneliness.

In our industry there can still be an unspoken culture of: "Just get on with it." "Don't complain." "Keep your head down."

But resilience should never mean silence.

Managers, supervisors and business owners across FM and cleaning have an opportunity to create environments where people feel respected, listened to and supported. Sometimes that support is not complicated. It can be as simple as checking in properly, recognising good work or noticing when somebody is not themselves.

Mental health is not just a corporate topic for office workers. It matters just as much to the cleaner opening a building at 05:00 as it does to the executive arriving at 09:00.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, perhaps the most important thing we can do is remind people working across our industry that they are seen, valued and that asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.”

TT Solutions has been providing intelligent support to facilities management providers, cleaning contractors and cleaning services providers, since 2005.
