Feast smart, waste less this December
The Waste & Resources Action Programme's new ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ festive campaign, supported by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs and the Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs, has been designed to help people save money, save time, and protect the planet during the festive season. Its festive cowboy-themed ‘Most Wasted’ series features five foods that are highly wasted in December.
With Simpler Recycling reforms on their way in 2026, WRAP understands the challenges that local authorities are facing, especially around introducing weekly household food waste collections.
Whether your authority already has food waste collections in place or is introducing one soon, this campaign will give everyone the opportunity to raise awareness of food waste and reinforce good household habits to feast well, waste less this Christmas.
There is still time to get involved, by downloading WRAP’s digital campaign assets to share across social media platforms to remind everyone to stay mindful of food waste during this peak in food consumption. Also, check out WRAP’s new ‘Money-Saving Guide to Christmas Food Planning’ blog, ‘Recipes for Using Up Christmas Leftovers’, and much more on the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website.
Together, let's help everyone to feast smart and waste less. Please tag the Love Food Hate Waste Instagram, Facebook and X accounts, and use the hashtag #LoveYourLeftovers when sharing on your channels.
Defra is also inviting households to 'feed the caddy, fuel the magic', highlighting the benefits of food waste recycling and informing households about the journey taken by kitchen scraps after they go into food waste bins. Audiences will also be encouraged to check local authority websites and find out when food waste collections are coming to their area.
The department will share an eye-catching campaign video about food waste recycling on today, (Thursday 18th December) alongside a new piece on its Environment blog. Between Christmas Day and New Year, Defra will share tips on preventing food waste, made with food content creators. In early January, it will share a behind-the-scenes look at an anaerobic digestion facility, featuring the Minister for Nature Mary Creagh MP.
Keep an eye out for this content on Defra's social media channels (including Instagram, X, Facebook and LinkedIn). Local authorities and councils are invited to reshare this content on their own channels.
As you plan for next year, please add Food Waste Action Week to your calendar -
