Thank Your Cleaner Day, celebrated annually across the UK and internationally on the third Wednesday of October, is an opportunity to show appreciation for the people who keep our workplaces, schools, hospitals, and public spaces safe and healthy. Today, Joanne Gilliard, CEO of Jangro, the UK and Europe's largest network of independent janitorial distributors, is calling for a shift in how we view and value cleaning professionals...
"Thank Your Cleaner Day is an important reminder to pause and show genuine appreciation for the people who work tirelessly to keep our spaces clean and safe. Too often, their efforts go unnoticed. Yet, without cleaning operatives, workplaces, schools, and hospitals simply couldn't function safely or efficiently.
I'm passionate about challenging the outdated perception that frontline hygiene professionals are 'just cleaners.' I hear this phrase far too often, and it couldn't be further from the truth. Cleaning is the backbone of public health that protects people every single day.
As conversations continue around respect for essential work and the post-pandemic appreciation of hygiene roles, this day serves as an opportunity to recognise cleaning operatives for what they truly are - highly skilled professionals whose expertise safeguards wellbeing, safety and efficiency across every sector.
Their work demands technical knowledge, from handling complex chemicals to maintaining large estates. It's physical, essential work, and it deserves the same respect as any other profession."
