Bins and recycling: some good ideas from 'Down Under'

* ALAN-Haerdcastle.jpegOur Leader last week on recycling confusion and the issues it can create, prompted an interesting response from our friend and ex-industry colleague, Alan Hardcastle, who published Inclean magazine in both Australia and New Zealand for many years:

"I always enjoy reading your observations of the cleaning and hygiene world. Today's on bins/recycling struck a chord.

Our local council does random bin inspections; during the night 'inspectors' go through the various bins and leave a 'report'. For most people their bins get a 'well done' while the odd offender is left a note telling them what they've have done wrong.

Every house gets regular free pick-ups for heavy stuff, thereby avoiding an expensive trip to the local council tip. If you do need to go to the tip, there are numerous very large bins clearly marked and staff are most helpful in making sure all your stuff goes in the right bin."

Policies in our eyes, that have been very well thought through...
