Principle retains The Gherkin in three-year deal
Principle Cleaning Services has been awarded a three-year contract extension at 30 St Mary Axe, also known as the Gherkin - one of London's most iconic buildings.
The new deal, awarded after a competitive tender, will see Principle, which has worked with 30 St Mary Axe for over a decade, continue to provide horizontal and internal and external vertical services along with waste management, pest control, stone cleaning and washroom services.
Designed by Foster + Partners as London's first ecological tall building, the Gherkin stands 180 metres high with 40 floors - primarily of office space and Searcys providing private function rooms and a restaurant and bar area on the top three floors. The building's operations director, Clare Jackaman, says of Principle's win:
"We are delighted that Principle Cleaning Services has retained the contract at the Gherkin. The team's exceptional service on site, combined with the company's attention to detail in the tender process and competitive pricing, made it a hard competitor to match.
"Principle is a people-focused company, prioritising not only its clients but also its workforce, which is reflected in the high standards of work delivered, strong staff progression and excellent staff retention. We look forward to continuing our partnership and growing together."
Tom Lloyd, Principle's CEO, says: "Retaining this contract is testament to the hard work of our team in keeping this world-famous building spotless for its many stakeholders. As part of our ongoing partnership, we re-evaluated every element of the existing delivery model to identify synergies between both horizontal and vertical services to provide an integrated, site-managed model, which delivers economies of scale.
"The building's design makes it a unique and challenging contract from a cleaning perspective. Each year we have delivered service improvements via our annual refresh programme and we plan to bring further innovation to the contract over the next three years."
Established in 1989, employee-owned Principle Cleaning Services has an annual turnover of £100m-plus and employs over 2,800 people. Its clients include such other well-known landmarks as The Shard and 20 Fenchurch Street (the 'Walkie Talkie' building).
