CST showcases Singapore's first toilet choke & leak sensors at LOO Awards
At the LOO (Let's Observe Ourselves) Awards held on Tuesday by the Restroom Association (Singapore), Convergent Smart Technologies (CST) showcased Singapore's first ‘toilet choke and leak sensors’, which were co-developed with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
The sensors not only effectively monitor any toilet bowl, urinal and wash basin for clogging and leaks but most importantly possess the capability to shut the inlet valve to prevent overflowing. This effectively translates to clean and drier toilets as well as saving water while the blockage is fixed.
A real-time notification is also sent to the toilet operator to rectify the blockage. The notification can also be further customised to alert a plumbing company to contact the toilet operator if the blockage cannot be rectified internally.
Development began in July this year and trials completed last month showed that the sensors operated successfully.
"In land-scarce Singapore where water conservation is crucial, the launch of these newly-developed sensors can prevent water wastage,” explains Cedric Hoon, co-founder of CST. “Its automatic shutoff capability can also prevent accidents due to wet and dirty floors. This ultimately keeps public toilets clean and safe for everyone.
“We hope more committed toilet operators will start installing such sensors."
Dr Lee Teck Kheng, founding director at ITE Technology Development Centre of the ITE, adds:
"We are delighted that our wireless non-intrusive leakage and chokeage water monitoring solution is well positioned with the Year of Public Hygiene as designated by the Ministry of Sustainability & the Environment.
“Additionally, we discovered that this year a Public Toilets Taskforce has already been established, and we believe that our new sensors will help make public restrooms a better place for everyone. For sustainability, this innovative system is now expanded to include in-situ underground water leak monitoring and smart building water monitoring."
Ng Aik Lee, senior sales project manager of the Keyence Singapore Pte, says his company is "very excited” to be involved in this innovation. “As a renowned top automation brand in Japan in factory automation, we hope our leading technology can play a part in conserving water and caring for Singapore's precious water resources," he adds.
Through showcasing its new sensors at the LOO Awards, CST is anticipating committed award recipients, who are building owners and toilet operators, will better understand the sensors and adopt them in their quality toilets in the near future.
Incorporated in 2015, CST developed ultra-low power Internet-of-Things for washroom and building facilities with its Smart Toilet System, which is deployed not only in Singapore but also in Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. Its products have been certified by the Singapore Green Building Council and are eligible for Happy Toilet certification by the Restroom Association (Singapore).
