Veolia gains two wins at Awards for Excellence
Veolia has taken home two Awards and a Highly Commended at the 2024 Awards for Excellence in Recycling & Waste Management, for driving ecological transformation forward through innovative technologies, and by championing communities.
Veolia has achieved two Awards for Excellence in the Local Authority Initiative and Team of the Year categories, with an honourable mention for the Civic Amenity Site of the Year award, showcasing its success in technological and people-focused advancements.
Westminster's Community Mobile Recycling Centre project was awarded the Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative Award. Veolia Westminster won for its work to make recycling more accessible for residents living in urban areas without easy access to traditional Household Reuse & Recycling Centres. The project has been a resounding success, with over 70% of donated items being diverted from energy recovery and over £200,000 being generated in social value.
The social value achievements delivered by the education team in Merseyside & Halton saw it take home Team of the Year. The local team has made great strides in delivering educational programmes that meet the diverse needs of the community, notably introducing community sessions for deaf and hard of hearing residents at the Gillmoss Recycling Discovery Centre and working towards achieving the Autism Friendly Accreditation from the National Autistic Society. This team exemplifies Veolia's goal to make recycling easy and accessible for all the communities in which it works.
Veolia, in partnership with Bromley Council, was Highly Commended in the Civic Amenity Site of the Year category for improvements made to Waldo Road Reuse & Recycling Centre. A people-first approach to the refurbishment of the site has resulted in an impressive 63% reuse & recycling rate alongside resident satisfaction levels of 98%, whilst maintaining a high level of safety. This highly successful project highlights Veolia's commitment to working in and for the community it serves.
Veolia was also shortlisted for the following awards:
* Contribution to Achieving Net-Zero for Veolia Westminster's partnership with Westminster City Council in delivering the world-first vehicle-to-grid scheme at Landmann Way.
* Contribution to Achieving Net-Zero and Innovation of the Year for Veolia Sheffield's trial of algae-based technology in reducing Energy Recovery Facility emissions in partnership with Sheffield City Council.
* Contribution to Achieving Net-Zero and Innovation of the Year for the safe treatment of NOx canisters at Birmingham's Empire facility.
* Team of the Year for Veolia Watford's highly successful environmental education programme, in partnership with Watford Borough Council.
* Recycled Product of the Year for Veolia and Harrods' collaboration on discontinuing its iconic green bags and transforming them into picnic benches for staff.
* Waste Management Initiative in the Retail, Commercial and Public Sector in partnership with The Berkeley hotel for improving its recycling rate from 36.4% to over 92% in just 16 months.
"We are delighted to have won two awards at this year's Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management," enthuses Cory Reynolds, corporate affairs & communications director, Veolia.
"At Veolia we strive for operational excellence, making a difference to both the communities we serve and the environments we work to protect values that are reflected in our teams across the UK that have been recognised in these diverse categories.
"We couldn't deliver these groundbreaking projects without the hard work and dedication of our workforce, as well as the customers with whom we work in partnership to deliver ecological transformation."
