WRAP helps councils digest incoming food waste collection regs

* WRAP-guidance-Food-Waste.jpgNew legislation means that Local Authorities will have to implement changes to food waste collection services from March 2026, and to help with planning and preparation, WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme) has issued useful guidance and is also hosting a webinar at the end of next month.

To help Local Authorities prepare for the collection of food waste from all households from March 2026, WRAP has worked with vehicle and container manufacturers to develop standardised specifications for specialist food waste collection vehicles, food waste containers and communal housing.

These specifications are supported by WRAP's Supplementary Procurement Guidance in relation to weekly food waste implementation. The aim of this guidance - and standardised specifications, is to address barriers and maximise supply so that food waste collection services can be implemented without unnecessary delay.

The webinar: 'Let's talk about Food Waste Collections', taking place on 31st January, will help Authorities get ready to introduce separate food waste collections. Attendees will hear from David Emmett of Portsmouth City Council, sharing his experience of implementing collections at the kerbside and more recently to all its communal dwellings. They will also hear from James Hendry of Basildon Council, who introduced separate food waste collections in October 2022 and opted to use electric vehicles.

Information will be shared about the resources WRAP has available to help Authorities:

* Assess their options when introducing food waste collections
* Plan for service changes and how to implement them

Supporting communications guidance and assets will also be introduced.
