Winners of CHSA's 2022 Undergraduate Bursary announced

* CHSA-burseries.jpgThree talented young people are celebrating. Olivia Baker, Liam Shepherd and Rebecca Griffiths have been selected as the recipients of the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association's 2022 Undergraduate Bursary.

So far, 14 young people have benefited from the Bursary while at university since the scheme was rejuvenated in 2016. Each receives £4,500, with £1,500 being paid at the start of each academic year or the first three years if the degree is longer.

Applicants were assessed by a judging panel, led by CHSA vice president and treasurer David Garcia, according to need, worthiness, endeavour and overall performance.

"The Bursary is a highlight of our year," says David Garcia, the driving force behind the CHSA Bursary. "It's exciting to meet the talented young people and hear about their hard work and aspirations for the future.

"Each one exhibited hard work and a determination to achieve. With 10 applicants for three bursaries, it was inevitable some would be disappointed. The final decision was incredibly challenging because we were impressed by everyone. All the applicants should feel amazingly proud of themselves.

"We wish the final three, and indeed all the applicants, every success at university and in their future careers."

Oliva Baker intends to study Law with Criminology at Royal Holloway, University of London. Olivia has worked with Prevention of Youth Violence to improve the lives of victims and young offenders. She is also part of the Hampshire Police and Crime Youth Commission and the Youth Independent Advisory Group. Olivia has worked hard academically to achieve success in her GCSEs and A' levels despite facing particular challenges.

Liam Shepherd is to study a BSc in Food & Nutrition at University College, Birmingham. With a love of baking and nutrition, Liam has worked in the catering team serving a school of 1,400 pupils. He was tasked with creating healthier desserts, nutritious sports snacks and bread products. Liam is an active Scout leader, having originally joined the organisation aged five, as a Beaver.

Rebecca Griffiths is going to Derby University to study Writing and Publishing. Rebecca spent a gap year tutoring young people in Mathematics, English and Science. She enjoyed the experience, getting satisfaction from supporting the development of her students and gaining confidence and life skills include communication, leadership and imaginative thinking.
