Spinning Gate Shopping Centre wins national award

* Spinning-Gate-Green-Apple.jpgSpinning Gate Shopping Centre has been given a National Award for its waste management achievements. The facility, which hosts 35 stores in 110,000sq.ft of retail space in Leigh Town Centre is now the proud owner of a National Green Apple Bronze Award for Environmental Best Practise for its achievements in 2018.

The Centre was presented with the national award at a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament, London.

This accolade follows the Centre's environmental success when it received its first Green Apple Award in 2018 for its recycling achievements and along with its waste management partner, B&M Waste Services, ensured 100% of the Centre's waste was diverted from landfill. During the ceremony, B&M Waste Services was presented with a National Bronze Award for Environmental Best Practice Paper and Packaging.

The shopping centre achieved its latest Green Apple Environmental award for reducing the waste produced from site by 6% with 100Kg of waste removed from the Centre. The Centre increased the volume of waste recycled by 40% with 60Kg of waste recycled. An impressive 100% of the waste removed from site was diverted from landfill.

Following a unit refurbishment, 62 tonnes of rubbish was removed and forwarded to a waste recycling centre to be reused as hardcore, resulting in 5% cost savings in the waste management budget. The Centre also reduced its electricity consumption by 5%.

The Centre recycles electrical and IT equipment and has recently introduced a used postage stamp recycling scheme for shoppers. Within the last two years, Spinning Gate has reduced its waste volume by 12%. The results of the waste management provision last year, saved 95,000 equivalent car miles (in a family electric car) saved 20,000 complete washing machine cycles, saved 355 TVs powered for a year, saved 128 fridge freezers powered for a year and 4,700 office printers powered for a week!

"We are absolutely delighted to receive our 2nd Green Apple Environmental Award for Environmental Best Practise," says Karen Cox, centre manager at Spinning Gate. "We are incredibly proud of the centre team who continue to drive our commitment to increasing recycling rates and minimising the waste produced from the centre... A huge 'thank you' to our waste management partner B&M Waste Services for its commitment to the environment and of course to Spinning Gate Shopping Centre too."

David Carter, account manager at B&M Waste Services comments:

"We are once again thrilled to congratulate Spinning Gate Shopping Centre on its achievement at The Green Apple Awards; winning a national award is highly coveted. We're proud to support its aim of diverting 100% of waste from landfill for conversion instead to green energy at an energy from waste facility, and waste minimisation overall.

"Karen and the team do a fantastic job engaging with the public and retailers alike to communicate the waste strategy and obtain buy-in to ensure a pleasant environment and great shopping experience for all visitors. Well done!"
