Cleaners' strike 'completely paralyses' Gaza hospitals

Hospitals in Gaza have been struggling to function following a strike by cleaners which started on Sunday over alleged non-payment of salaries. Gaza's health ministry spokesman Ashraf al Qedra said on Monday that operating theatres were "completely paralysed" due to the accumulation of dirt and rubbish in the hospitals for the second day in a row.

He said that medical teams can't provide medical services in any hospital or medical centre and that nearly 200 operations had been postponed. The strike has obstructed the work of 13 hospitals, 51 primary health care centres and 22 other medical centres, reports Xinhua.

Physicians organised a sit-in at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza Strip Monday morning, calling for the demands of the striking workers to be met.
