New minimum wage rate for South African cleaners
South Africa's contract cleaning employees' minimum wages are to be increased from 1st December.
Cleaners in Area A (the City of Cape Town) Ekurhuleni, City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane and Nelson Mandela Bay; and also local councils of Emfuleni, Merafong, Mogale City, Metsimaholo, Randfontein, Stellenbosch and Westonaria) will earn a minimum of R19.38 (£1.16) per hour - up from the R18.01 (£1.08) per hour minimum for 2015/2016.
The remainder of workers in the sector will earn a minimum of R17.66 (£1.05) per hour - up from the R16.41 (£0.98) per hour minimum for 2015/2016.
The increases cover the period 1st December 2016 to 30th November 2017.
