Am I the only one who’s looked at the pictures of the country’s worst-rated supermarkets that are all over this week’s newspapers, and not been surprised that a number have been found to be unhygienic? The forecourts of two establishments are strewn with rubbish that can’t have just appeared the day the pictures were taken and both are stained by liquids, which could perhaps be urine. I wouldn’t have set foot in one of those shops even if I’d been desperate for chocolate!
It’s not just the visibly dirty shops that will harbour germs and infestations but those that look clean too – as I discovered when I saw a mouse scurry under the counter at my local shining Sainsbury’s some years back! Of course we should all be regularly washing our hands but I wonder how many of us wipe down tins/jars/bottles or packets before we put them away, as my mother taught me to do. If not, perhaps now is the time to start.
Although it’s hard to believe - thanks to the incessant rain, thunder and grey, wintery-looking skies, today’s the day John and I bid you a brief farewell so we can take our annual Summer breaks. As I have several festivals booked in over the coming few weeks, I’m hoping that the weather dries up, since camping in sodden fields doesn’t have the appeal that outdoor living in the sunshine has, since even my favoured compost loos can take on the appearance of the trashed public washrooms that are all too common in the UK, when they're used by people who are drenched through.
Whatever the weather, we’ll be back on 3rd September, so if you have news you’d like to share with our 100,000-plus readers in 163 countries, do please send it to us for consideration well before then.
