Rome to the Dome - pedal power style!

* Dennis-Carver_rider.jpgFor some years now, intrepid cyclists have been taking on the challenge of riding from the Colosseum in Rome, Italy, to St Paul's Cathedral ('the Dome') in London, England, raising huge sums for various charities. On Saturday, a group is going to embark on this epic journey all over again. For some it will be a fairly regular trip, while others won't know what they're letting themselves in for...

Amongst them is Brightwell Dispensers' Dennis Carver, who is riding for the third time the 1400 miles between the two iconic buildings - this time to raise money for Help for Heroes. As an ex-serviceman himself he feels an affinity with a truly worthwhile cause.

Dennis told Cleanzine yesterday that having tried the 'easy' route along the coast and up the Rhone valley in 2001 and encountering the Mistrale (not fun) he opted for a route over the Alps in 2003 only to be met with 42 degrees C in the hottest Summer for decades.

This time, to add a little frisson of extra excitement, the group plans to climb to 2,800 metres, but that depends on whether or not the snowploughs have cleared a path for them! So far it's not looking good. If you think you've seen snow, think again...

You can follow the travellers' tales of 'derring do' on Facebook at Rome 2 Dome 2013 or alternatively you can read our regular updates as we get them, in Cleanzine and on our Facebook page.
