Environmentally responsible lamp recycling initiative now available in Canada
Furthering their commitment to lamp recycling and to protecting the environment, Veolia ES Technical Solutions, the hazardous waste division of Veolia Environmental Services North America (VESNA) and Osram Sylvania have anounced the expansion of their joint online programme to offer RecyclePak recycling kits into Canada.
This collaboration began in 2006 when Osram Sylvania sought a lamp recycling solution for customers' small quantities of mercury-containing lamps and ballasts. Veolia Environmental Services' RecyclePak lamp and ballast recycling kits provided that solution, and the two companies launched an industry-first web programme at Greenbuild that year in Denver. Working together, they also designed and introduced what is believed to be the first recycling kit for small quantities of CFLs generated by consumers.
RecyclePak is Veolia Environmental Services' complete pre-paid lamp and ballast recycling solution. One price includes everything needed to recycle including shipping to and from a facility, packaging and recycling and written compliance documentation. Veolia Environmental Services' RecyclePak programme not only provides a convenient recycling option, it also ensures complete compliance with state, provincial and local disposal regulations while reducing the risks associated with improper storage.
At Greenbuild this year, the companies have announced an expansion of this successful online programme into Canada through www.sylvania.com Customers in Canada can now take advantage of the same, simple, cost-effective lamp recycling programmes that have been offered for years in the US.
"Expanding our partnership with Osram Sylvania is a true testament to both companies' global commitment to protecting public health and the environment," said Jim Bell, President and CEO of Veolia ES Technical Solutions as the move was announced. "Veolia Environmental Services is committed to minimising the environmental impact of our own activities and helping our customers convert their waste into a resource by expanding recycling, composting and renewable energy production. We are proud to be associated with such a socially responsible organization like Osram Sylvania."
Jennifer Dolin, manager of sustainability and environmental affairs at Osram Sylvania said: " Osram Sylvania has always promoted lamp and ballast recycling as the most responsible method of disposal and efficient use of our resources. We take great pride in making it easy for our customers to be environmentally responsible. By furthering our commitment with Veolia Environmental Services and offering RecyclePak to our Canadian customers, we hope that more businesses will see how easy and cost-effective it is to recycle their spent lamps."
As a subsidiary of Osram Sylvania, Sylvania Lighting Services upholds that same commitment by being the first lighting service company to offer lamp recycling as part of every service and maintenance contract. Each year, SLS sends nine million lamps to certified recycling facilities, preventing over 114 pounds of mercury from going into landfills.
Since beginning their partnership back in 2006, Osram Sylvania and Veolia Environmental Services have experienced great success with the programme, selling enough containers to recycle an estimated 650,000 lamps to date. Additionally, Veolia Environmental Services' RecyclePak provides a recycling and disposal solution for Osram Sylvania's electronics waste, including batteries, computer electronics and other mercury containing items.
To kick off this exciting expansion, Veolia Environmental Services and Osram Sylvania are offering a discount promotion at Greenbuild. Show attendees who visit both booths and order RecyclePak products through www.sylvania.com will receive a 15 Osram Sylvania discount and be eligible to win one of 20 Sylvania LED light bulbs.
The Greenbuild International Expo and Conference, which is taking place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, Canada, finishes tomorrow.
