Masslinn cloth system helps NHS Trust

Healthcare providers are reporting increasing needs for new methods of cleaning to combat the spread of infection.

At one leading NHS Trust, staff have adopted Masslinn cloths, which offer benefits including reductions in noise levels over traditional cleaning systems.

Previously the Weston Area NHS Trust, based at Weston General Hospital near Weston-super-Mare, reported issues with both noise and the effectiveness of traditional cleaning methods.

The Masslinn disposable cloths, impregnated with mineral oil which catches dust and minimises the risk of it being swept into the air and further dispersed, were trialled at the Trust to improve efficiency.

Sally Walsh, housekeeping manager, says: "Previously we relied on traditional vacuum cleaning to remove dust from wards. This caused problems with noise levels, even with low-noise equipment.

"We trialled the Masslinn cloths and were very happy with how they performed because the dust pick-up is excellent, even after vacuuming.

"We have continued to order the cloths and implemented their use in the general wards of the Weston General Hospital. Our infection control team is happy and I have given my recommendation to colleagues."

Brian Boll, systems director at Jigsaw Cleaning Systems, which supplied the cloths says: "Dust really does present a hidden danger to hospitals, causing health issues including asthma and skin irritations.

"The Masslinn cloths are a highly effective way of reducing the amount of dust in the air by 10 times if used as part of a cleaning regime.

"New technology like this can lead the way in infection control and it is heartening to see the use of Masslinn cloths increasing as more NHS trusts see them as a genuine improvement on traditional systems."

Weston Area Health NHS Trust provides a range of acute and rehabilitation hospital services as well as some community health services to residents of North Somerset.

Jigsaw Cleaning Systems has the sole UK distribution rights for Masslinn cloths in the UK and supplies to a range of NHS organisations.
