Spanish professional cleaning sector continues to increase exports

Exports in the Spanish professional cleaning & hygiene sector are following a good trend, according to the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Cleaning & Hygiene (Asfel). Faced with declining domestic market, manufacturers are turning to exporting their professional cleaning products to improve the balance sheet. They are also looking for export destinations.

According to Spanish trade data, in 2012, exports of professional cleaning products increased by 4.06% and in the first six months of this year increased by 13.33%. Highlights include sales to Africa, which increased by 22.77% from January to June this year. In the case of countries like Morocco, sales increased by 38.65%.

The search for international customers is fundamental for Spanish firms, and businesses are accessing ever more distant markets. An example of this is that sales to Saharan Africa increased by 24.22% in the first six months of 2013.

Spanish exports in general are experiencing a period of buoyancy and in the period January - June 2013, global exports increased by 8%. Significant increases occurred in sales to non-EU countries such as South Africa (+64,2%), Algeria (+31%), Brazil (+40.4%), China (+13.4%), and the U.S. (+5.4%). Total Spanish exports to the EU increased by 4.7% in this period.

Although the process is long and the adaptation required complex, international vision is part of the basic strategy of the sector. According to Asfel, having greater access to international markets and finding new clients abroad has become a requirement for companies of the cleaning sector.
