Cleantec Innovation raises the flag for Thanet

* Jason-Bailey-Cleantec.jpgNot even last year's sewage leak could stop Thanet's beaches from sweeping the board at the Blue Flag Awards this year, thanks in no small part to the expertise of Cleantec Innovation.

The East Kent Company's environmentally-aware cleaning products were used during an ongoing clean-up operation, resulting in eight prestigious blue flags, (a voluntary eco-label awarded to more than 3850 beaches and marinas in 48 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean) being awarded to the district's beaches.

The achievement demonstrates the fact that the regeneration of this tourist hotspot is on the rise, as councils, charities and local businesses work together to improve the south east's coastline.

The award-winning beaches - Minnis Bay, West Bay in Westgate, St Mildred's Bay, Westbrook Bay, Margate Main Sands, Botony Bay, Joss Bay and Stone Bay - had to meet strict criteria based on European standards.

The focus this time round was firmly on water quality, and Thanet's beaches snapped up the globally-recognised awards by meeting the new 'Excellent' standard required under the EU Bathing Water directive.

These awards come the year after raw sewage was leaked into the sea off Thanet, after a pumping station broke down.

Bearing in mind the safety of visitors and the importance of the local eco-system, councils and businesses took action to ensure the amount of pollution and chemicals released into the waters as part of an on-going clean-up operation is kept to a minimum.

Cleantec Innovation, which has recently relocated from Thanet to Discovery Park in Sandwich - is proud to have contributed to the district's success in the Blue Flag Awards. Cleantec Innovation's Head of Marine Business Development, Jason Bailey, says:

"We have been supplying our products to various contractors throughout the Kent coastline for over nine months and have received a really positive response. The fact that these products are not only free from harmful chemicals and solvents but also tackle the problem of grease, grime and residue is something a lot of people are keen to be using.

"In particular, our Pro30 concrete and wood surface cleaner, which has also been used on wind turbines just off the Kent coast since February last year. Pro 30, offers superior cleaning power with its microbial technology. It does not contain chlorine, bleach, ammonia or phosphates, which means it is safe for both people and sea life.

"We're proud to be a Kent-based manufacturer with a global reach and the blue flags which have just been awarded to the area we operate in is fantastic news for all those involved."

Cleantec Innovation, which was established in 1996, is fast becoming increasingly renowned in the commercial and retail cleaning market for its high-performance green products, which are used by councils, businesses and homes throughout the UK and overseas. The company supplies products to Thanet District Council to clean the sea defences and slipways on over 20 miles of south east coastline.

Thanet District Council's Senior Maintenance Surveyor, Alan Cook, says: "Cleantec has provided us with an environmentally-friendly product combined with a first-class service and technical support.

"With the recent blue flags awarded to our beaches, part of this credit would be due to some of the works associated with the joint works carried out between all involved."

John Birchwell of Maxwells Ground Maintenance, which helps to maintain Thanet's coastline, has faith in the power of Cleantec Innovation's products.

"We have been successfully using the Pro30 product for coastline maintenance on concrete steps and slipways and would highly recommend this product as a replacement to harsh chemicals," he says.

"We currently maintain 20 miles of the south east coastline, which have recently been awarded the Blue Flag. We take great care in protecting the environment and marine life."

From local businesses to the people of Thanet, everyone is looking forward to a Summer in an area which is being put firmly back on the list of popular tourist destinations, with thanks to the multiple efforts being made to regenerate the area and show the rest of the country what there is to offer.
