British Cleaning Council welcomes new London Living Wage

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, marked the start of Living Wage Week by announcing a new rate for the London Living Wage earlier this month.

At a briefing in City Hall, he revealed that the London Living Wage would rise from £8.30 to £8.55 per hour, while the rate outside London would also rise by 25p, from £7.20 to £7.45.

"By building motivated, dedicated workforces the Living Wage helps businesses to boost the bottom line and ensures that hard working people who contribute to London's success can enjoy a decent standard of living," he said. "Despite very challenging economic times it's clear that more employers are waking up to the huge benefits that paying the Living Wage delivers."

Andrew Large, Secretary General of the British Cleaning Council, welcomed the announcement, saying: "The British Cleaning Council strongly supports the Living Wage campaign. Companies in all sectors are under constant scrutiny regarding their ethical and moral stances, and by paying the Living Wage they can show a commitment to the well-being of their staff.

"This can also have wider benefits for business, as employees feel more supported and valued, increasing staff retention and thus providing a better service to customers. The BCC will continue to add its voice to calls for a wider adoption of the Living Wage across the cleaning and FM industries."

The Living Wage was one of the topics covered at last month's BCC Conference, which was held at the Coin Street Conference Centre, London. As part of her keynote speech to delegates, Shadow Minster for Innovation and Science, Chi Onwurah MP, praised "some of the great work that is being done in the British Cleaning Council to move towards the living wage."
