One of my daughter's university friends has a holiday job in a local high school, working as a grounds / building maintenance assistant - and he and his colleagues have an interesting schedule to follow.

Apparently twice a day after the school breaks, they have to spend 20 minutes litter picking!

There are, I gather, plenty of bins around both the canteen area and outside, as well as at the end of each corridor. But do the pupils use them? No they don't! They drop the litter wherever they are (despite often being almost within touching distance of a bin) and it's the maintenance team's job to go around after them and pick it up.

Forget for a minute the fact that it's my taxes (and yours if you live in the UK and are working) which are paying for this ridiculous part of the daily schedule and consider for one minute the message this is sending out to our young people. And then think about what they're going to be like as adults and what they're going to be teaching their own children about litter.

Blood boiling? So is mine. And I'm not going to let this lie.

Yours,
