BioVigil marks major milestone in patient safety and infection prevention, surpassing 1bn hand hygiene opportunities
Automated hand hygiene and infection prevention technology specialist BioVigil, has recorded more than 1 billion hand hygiene opportunities (HHOs) since the company's founding in 2012.
This milestone reflects the ongoing commitment of healthcare workers at BioVigil partner hospitals across the US, to improving hand hygiene compliance and patient safety. Each HHO reduces infection risk, strengthens safety and improves the quality of care delivered.

Every hand hygiene opportunity is a moment where a healthcare worker protects those under their care by cleaning their hands before, after or during a patient interaction. BioVigil has transformed how hospitals monitor and improve hand hygiene performance. The system captures HHOs using infrared beacons placed at patient room entrances and exits. These beacons connect to badges worn by healthcare workers. Badges can prompt caregivers with visual, audible and vibratory cues to sanitise their hands.
Benefits include:
• Unique sniffing technology. BioVigil is said to be the only electronic hand hygiene monitoring system that uses proprietary vapour-sensing technology to confirm that sanitiser was actually applied to hands. Other systems, claims the company, merely record that sanitiser was dispensed - without confirming whether hand hygiene measures actually took place
• Individual level accountability. The system documents entry and exit events by user. A green light on the badge reinforces accountability and provides patients with visible confirmation of adherence at the point of care
• Real time correction. Audible, vibratory and visual cues prompt immediate behaviour change, preventing cross contamination before it can occur
