SOAPBOX: With yesterday being World Toilet Day, Joanne Gilliard, CEO of Jangro, shared her thoughts...

* Joanne_Gilliard.jpg"World Toilet Day is a great reminder that good hygiene starts with the basics, yet many people overlook the most important steps. Most focus on scrubbing the visible bowl, but bacteria often thrive under the rim where the water is released during flushing.

What's more, nearly half of Brits flush with the lid up. This simple habit can send microscopic droplets containing harmful bacteria into the air and onto nearby surfaces. Closing the lid before flushing is a quick and effective way to reduce the risk of contamination.

Toilet brushes are another hidden source of germs. If not disinfected regularly, they can harbour bacteria such as E. coli, which can easily transfer onto surrounding surfaces. Giving brushes a weekly clean with disinfectant, replacing them frequently, or switching to a silicone version that's easier to keep hygienic, helps minimise this risk.

It's also worth remembering that bacteria don't just live in the toilet. High-touch areas such as the flush button, door handle and light switch are often overlooked but are just as important to clean.

While bleach is a common go-to, it is discouraged by most professionals. Excessive use can damage surfaces and increase exposure to harsh chemicals. A smarter approach is to use a detergent-based cleaner, and if needed, a descaler to effectively remove deposits. Jangro would highly recommend you choose a more sustainable and less harmful, eco-certified alternative.

For both households and businesses, the message is simple - small, consistent habits make a big difference. Closing the lid and maintaining regular hygiene routines all help protect health and prevent cross-contamination."
