Cleaning has been very much in the news again recently following the leak of an un-named UK three-star national hotel chainís cleaning schedule.
Many of those who saw the video clip on Buzzfeed, were horrified to learn that mattress covers, bedspreads and shower curtains are cleaned only quarterly and that other jobs, such as fixtures, fittings, upholstery and furniture and the cleaning of heating, ventilation and air conditioning filters are on a monthly rota of weekly cleaning jobs that covers four weeks, (meaning theyíre only tackled once a month). More worryingly perhaps, this weekly rota also includes the cleaning of toilet hinges, loo roll holders, sink overflows and the bathroom door and frame.
Buzzfeed asks: How clean is clean enough?
Naturally the rest of the press picked up the story and I've taken quite an interest in the online forums that followed their reports - many of them featuring contributions from cleaning staff and hotel managers themselves. It seems that there's an enormous difference in what the various establishments deem as being good enough for their guests with some saying that bathrooms are thoroughly sanitised between visits and others saying that if the old bedding can pass for being new on, they'll not bother changing it!
