I’m delighted to have received an email from Brightwell Dispensers’ Dennis Carver, telling me that he and the other brave souls (several from the UK cleaning industry) who were cycling from ‘Rome to the Dome’ to raise money for charity, all arrived at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral safely,  16 days and 1400 miles after they set off.

“Only three of the group managed the Col de la Bonnette (2800 metres), the rest of us opting for the 1996 metres of the Col de Larche, which was challenge enough,” admits Dennis.  “We were lucky with the weather, but not the Italian drivers, one of whom trashed the back end of the van on the second day, but thanks to some sterling work by the local Fiat dealer in Grosseto, it was made legal if not pretty inside two days. Now it's back to work and it's the usual anti-climax, but lots of good memories to savour.”

Judging by the gesticulating going on in our image, captioned, “Which way is north?” I can see it wasn’t just the cycling that posed a challenge, so if you have any spare cash and feel some sympathy for the poor devils who undertook this gruelling bike-ride, do get in touch with Dennis at [email protected] and make a donation to Help for Heroes – his chosen charity.
