The Apprenticeship Scheme in action at CK Group

* CKGroup-Apprentice.jpgWhen leading cleaning contractor and consumables supplier CK Group were approached by business development company South London Business (SLB) as a result of the government's reinvigorated apprenticeship scheme, CK Group's Managing Director, Ian Pether, was only too happy to agree to take on Charlie Porter after a number of prospective unemployed local youngsters were interviewed by the group Training Manager, Donna Bryant.

Charlie started in the company's busy warehouse as an apprentice warehouseman under the watchful eye of Winston Nugent, the Warehouse Manager (who was grateful for the additional pair of hands in this fast growing area of the group's business activities).

Although Charlie's progress was mentored by SLB, all day-to-day training in stock ordering, picking, vehicle loading and consumables despatch took place in CK Group's warehouse, with both "hands on" experience and theoretical instruction in a variety of areas, including workplace health and safety, stock control, chemical handling and environmental awareness.

Charlie impressed with his enthusiasm and willingness and made such good progress in the first four months (of his nine month apprenticeship) that Ian Pether decided, as an added bonus to his training, to agree to the company paying for him to attend a two day intensive fork lift operators course to add "another string to his bow."

A day of both theory and practical instruction on site at the CK Group's warehouse in Sydenham by a registered instructor from fork lift specialist Mexmast, was followed by a day of further practical training at their bespoke indoor training school in Burgess Hill.

All of Charlie's new colleagues at CK Group were delighted to have received a call at the conclusion of the second day's training to say that not only had he passed his operators course, but had done so with flying colours!

Ian Pether says: "We share Charlie's delight at his achievement and are pleased to have added further value to his training with a skill which he can use in the coming years."

CK Group was born out of the successful City & Kent specialist healthcare cleaning company that was established two generations ago to service London hospitals. An early adopter of the latest Infection Control products and practices helped develop the company, which has now also grown into a provider of Deep Cleaning services and is a major supplier of equipment and cleaning consumables to healthcare and non-health related customers across the country.

South London Business was set up in 2010 to support and promote local businesses, enhance regeneration, reduce unemployment and up-skill the work force.
