Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 163 countries worldwide! I’ve been puzzled by a news story that’s hit the headlines in the national press this week, which appears to reveal that a new study by Cardiff University students – the results of which were published in the American Journal of Infection Control – has found that disinfectant wipes are likely to be spreading superbugs in hospitals in which they’re used, rather than disinfecting the surfaces they’re used on. I say ‘appears to reveal’ because in searching for the source of the report on which these news stories are based, all I’ve been able to find is a study that was carried out in 2011 – since which time the technology behind these wipes has come on in leaps and bounds. I shall be investigating further, but in the meantime, if you’re a manufacturer or distributor of these wipes and find that your customers are cancelling orders because of these reports – or if you’re a user of disinfectant wipes and are now thinking of rewriting your cleaning procedures; please hang fire until the source of the report has been uncovered and we can verify that the studies are indeed new and learn more about the procedures that were followed during the tests. Also, a phrase that’s much bandied about is ‘It’s what you do with it that counts’ and the newspaper reports all cite the moving of contaminants from one surface to another. As anyone with any cleaning savvy will tell you, these wipes are meant for one use only and are not designed for wiping multiple surfaces! Finally, last week we promised you further breaking news… The organisers of the Cleaning Show tell us that they’re planning a show in the north of the country – possibly around Manchester – to cater for those who were unable to make it down to the event at London’s ExCel this Spring. It will be held a few weeks before ISSA/Interclean in Amsterdam and is to be a “low cost” event for exhibitors. A venue for the event is currently being decided upon.
