Ask any British child (who’s been taught some history) about our network of canals and the chances are they’ll be able to tell you that these waterways were designed to provide irrigation but then really came into their own during the Industrial Revolution when they enabled suppliers to move large quantities of goods around the country.

* canal-boat.jpgI can’t imagine the manufacturer involved in the production of this particular detergent ever expected to take its products to market via the canal but if it were me I’d be turning this week’s mishap to my advantage and using it in my marketing material…

Manchester’s Ashton Canal was turned into what may well be the world’s biggest bubble bath when water shot in by fire crews tackling a blaze at a nearby chemical plant mixed with detergents that were being stored there. When the residue drained into the canal, it formed a 6ft wall of foam that covered a 100ft stretch of the waterway.

I understand that the foam raised a few smiles from those needing to navigate it and luckily initial investigations by the Environment Agency reveal little impact on water quality and thus minimal danger to wildlife, which is really lucky.

On a sad note, we report below, the loss of Colin Hasson, one of the industry’s favourites in this neck of the woods and probably well remembered by those who visited the British Institute of Cleaning Science’s stand at an international cleaning show during the nineties and early noughties. I’ve heard about Colin’s rise through the industry’s ranks more than once but without anything written down it would have been stupid to guess and I notice there’s very little on the BICSc page itself. It occurred to me that we should all perhaps have had something in place, much as the press does for royalty, statesmen and important celebrities and the like. That’s quite an accolade, isn’t it?

If you have any memories of Colin you’d like to share, do please email us and we’ll set aside a page on our website as a tribute to the lovely man.

Please get in touch either by emailing me or posting a comment on our Facebook page. www.facebook.com/Cleanzine

What might you be taking from the washroom?

* ets-pic.jpgNew research by the University of Westminster, commissioned by ETS, the European Tissue Symposium, concludes that drying hands with single-use towels shows a lower level of airborne microbe dispersal and contamination. This could help achieve more hygienic washroom settings.

The study, undertaken by microbiologist Keith Redway who has already presented top line findings at last year's HIS Conference in Lyon, looked at the potential for microbial contamination from hand-drying and the potential risks for airborne microbe dispersal, particularly if hand washing is sub optimal.

The evolution of Earth Day: recycling becomes the focus for 22nd April

* ecoatm.jpgIn 1970, Earth Day was originated to help save the environment from air and water pollution, but today, the celebration takes on a new meaning. Some 47% of Americans associate Earth Day with recycling, while only 23% associate it with cleaning up local parks or beaches - which most resembles the day's original purpose - according to a survey from ecoATM, the nationwide network of automated electronics recycling kiosks.

Recycling options have increased since the first Earth Day, and companies such as ecoATM are giving consumers an incentive to do so; ecoATM offers instant cash at the 1,890 kiosks across the US for cell phones, tablets and MP3 players.

Professional cleaners like using Greyland products

* Sample-room2.jpgIs it because of the 'no nonsense' product naming that means there can be no confusion on the label as to what the contents do? Far simpler than trying to make sense of manufacturer product codes isn't it?

Or is it the great value for money that Greyland products offer? After all, with Greyland it doesn't cost much to clean an awful lot.

Now is the perfect time for a ‘digital Spring Cleaning’

With so many of us now linking our personal communications systems to those within our workplaces, it makes more sense than ever to ensure that our systems are secure.

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and Better Business Bureau (BBB) suggest that now is the perfect time for a ‘digital Spring Cleaning’ to coincide with the more traditional home and office annual cleaning and decluttering rituals and that we should add a digital element by updating security software, unclogging our inboxes and ridding our smartphones of unused apps.
