Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! Although this is the final part of our live show report from last week’s ISSA/Interclean exhibition in Amsterdam, it was clear that the new products and real, very clever innovation we discovered there, will help fill Cleanzine’s pages for weeks to come. For our part, we noticed a solid move towards sustainability with chemicals, machinery and consumables. We like that! A number of companies also launched some really useful apps so if you want to improve your standards of cleaning, streamline your training processes and avoid costly and sometimes dangerous mistakes on site, watch this space! The show organisers tell us that the event registered the largest gathering of cleaning professionals in the world to date, giving a positive indication that the industry is recovering from the recession - a major encouragement for the entire sector. “A rise in attendance of 5% (29,325 visitors) compared to 2012 (28,001 visitors) is very good news for the global cleaning industry,” says event manager Rob den Hertog. “We also had more exhibitors (696) than at the last edition (669). There were four buzzing days filled with positive vibes and a genuine sense of good business was conducted. We are very proud on this 25th edition and are grateful to our exhibitors and visitors for reinforcing the position of ISSA/Interclean as an exhibition not-to-be-missed.” John and I are already looking forward to the next event in 2016 (10 - 13 May) but hope the rain holds off! I’ve been visiting the show every year since 1990 (when I was a PR manager working on what was then the Lever Industrial account) and just about every year in between too, but I’ve never had to get a brolly out. Last week really made up for it! Finally, there was a sad occurrence on the opening day, which did far more to dampen people’s spirits than the rain did – the collapse of Peter Holt, ex-Truvox International managing director, Tacony CFC board member and past master of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, at the show’s 25th anniversary celebration at which, I believe, he was being honoured for services to the industry. Peter sadly passed away in hospital shortly afterwards. We deliberately chose not to make an announcement in the Cleanzine Show Daily - not because of any lack of regard for Peter but because we felt that, bearing in mind Peter's involvement in overseas markets in different time zones and the close relationships he will have built up in those countries, it would have been wrong for those who were close to Peter to learn of his passing through the media, rather than a more sensitively handled personal phone call. His funeral was held yesterday. An obituary features below and it should go without saying that our thoughts are with Peter’s wife and daughter and his wider family and close friends. Prestigious international Red dot award for Vermop Salmon’s Sprint V holder Gareth Jenkins, managing director for Vermop UK and Ireland, (left) and Bavarian-based Thomas Weber, who has recently been appointed marketing manager, told us about the company’s comprehensive research, development and testing facilities. These are clearly being put to good use, as the Sprint V flat mop holder has just won the internationally acclaimed Red Dot award for product design 2014. Airdri - an eyecatching display Airdri showcased two new additions to its enhanced hand dryer portfolio and ensured that they caught the visitors' attention by having them decorated with famous paintings. The ploy certainly worked with us as it drew us on to the stand, where we met with marketing & communications manager Trudi Osborne (pictured) and newly appointed research & development director, John Forshaw. Trudi told us that each model in Airdri's current range has been renamed to create the new 'Q' range. The renaming and the introduction of the new hand dryers represent an ongoing programme of activity to mark 40 years of providing innovative and quality products to Airdri's customers around the world. Antibacterial composition means machines are food-safe and ideal for hospital use It's not often we see a white floor cleaning machine, so keen to find out more, we stopped to watch Paul Earnshaw of Columbus Cleaning Machines - the exclusive UK agent for the Columbus range of vacuum cleaners, scrubber dryers, single disc rotaries, sweepers and spray extraction machines - demonstrate the ease with which he could manoeuvre the new Columbus RA66/BM60 scrubber dryer. When we asked about the colour, he explained that it denotes machines which incorporate the noBac system - specially developed for use in hospitals, homes for the elderly, kitchens and the food industry... in other words, every area that has stringent hygienic requirements and the need to meet HACCP regulations. Show visitors are used to seeing Vernon Holmes, Paul Sherrington and the team working up a sweat trying to look after all the customers on the stand and one could be forgiven for thinking that nothing's changed. It has though - since Vernon is now Vice-Chairman of Scot Young Research and he and the team were dealing with enquiries regarding a totally different brand. Quite a few visitors remarked that they'd never seen the stand so busy, so clearly Vernon has taken his exhibition expertise with him and is applying it to his new role. "It's very much business as usual!" he told us. Gmatic Superior from Dr Gansow People always commend Italian styling when it comes to the look of a machine but I have to say that the Gmatic Superior machines from Dr Gansow are really striking, with their metallic dark green sheen. Moritz Gansow (pictured left with his brother Lukas) told us that the scrubber driers have impressed many visitors with their polished solid Stainless Steel Aisi 304 construction accompanied by acrylic elements and big drives in three stage electronic power shift. "These make the ultimate ratio," he told us. "The machines are solidly built and made to last. And thanks to a lean and highly experienced organisation, they are priced to sell." Kennedy Hygiene’s cleverly designed paper towel dispenser really can save money We’d heard about the Pod, so were delighted when international account manager Jeffery Woods showed us how it works. "The Pod is a unique reserve roll, auto cut, paper hand towel dispenser that has one of the largest paper capacities on the market," he said. "Thanks to its patented reserve roll loading system, a new roll can be loaded before the previous one has been fully used, thus making sure no paper is wasted. This reserve feature can save up to 20% of paper consumption (depending on paper specification). Keep tabs on your operatives working remotely Those that employ cleaners, maintenance and security staff should really have a cost-effective method of keeping track of their remote workforce. Missed or late visits jeopardise client relationships and clients are more and more often insisting on independent verification of visits. To keep on the right side of clients and gain an edge on competitors, employers of remote workforces need look no further than electronic monitoring with Panztel, the international group and a market leader in the management control of remote workers. It is with great sadness, that the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners reports the sudden death of Peter Holt. Peter, who was 69, died last Tuesday, 6th May, whilst attending the ISSA/Interclean exhibition in Amsterdam. He was about to participate in the exhibition’s 25th anniversary celebrations when he collapsed and died of a heart attack. CPR was immediately administered but, tragically, this proved to be unsuccessful. Peter recently retired from his role as Managing Director of Truvox International, a company he joined in 1991. David Overell, his successor, says that Peter was tasked with turning round the company, which was in decline at the time. With his wealth of experience in overseas business, Peter quickly formulated the strategy of developing an export customer base, and, at the same time, marketing the manufacturing capacity of Truvox to potential OEM customers. We’re not opening the door to let you out until we know you’ve washed your hands! No doubt – unless you’re one of the culprits of course – you, too have been disgusted at the numbers of people who apparently don’t bother to wash their hands after they visit the bathroom. We all know we should ‘clean up’ but many don’t, no doubt going out and spreading undesirables by shaking hands with others or touching door handles, banisters, handrails etc. But what’s there to do about it? Most of us in the industry have come across the phrase ‘captive audience’, when people are talking about advertising on the back of cubicle doors, behind urinals and above wash stations but Ophardt has cleverly taken this more literally, designing a wash station that prevents the washroom door from opening until it has had hands placed unde A great three-way partnership! We encountered abrasives specialist KGS’s Sophie Artar ably demonstrating the attributes of Flexis floor cleaning technology, using the ever popular TomCat Edge – clearly a great three-way partnership! Sophie told us that KGS, which has some 10,000 customers in more than 70 countries, has seen KGS Flexis pads with Ferrzon sell really well since their launch just over 18 months ago. Vectair’s vibe - a fresh approach We knew the Vibe - the much talked about aircare dispenser from Vectair Systems, would redefine the world of aircare but we’d never had much opportunity to talk to the team and find out exactly how the technology works and what its benefits are. It’s so easy to change the battery… When we covered the new Truvox Multiwash 340/Pump Battery machine in our first Show Daily last week, we hadn’t at that stage had a chance to see it in action. If you missed the piece, you can read all about the machine’s many features and benefits in the column right but one of the features that makes it so impressive is the quick change battery system, which Natalie deftly demonstrated to us. Inpacs: delivering a subliminal message? We didn’t get close enough to Inpacs – the international distributor group, to find out just why the stand featured a couple of lads showing off their ball skills, but wondered if it was something to do with showing potential customers and interested distributors that Inpacs members never take their eye off the ball and are forever juggling everything around to ensure they keep their customers happy… The Cleanzine Archive Search We keep an extensive archive of news stories and product information that have featured in past issues of The Cleanzine. A welcome return and a novel machine
Prochem Europe is attending Interclean with two new key products from its extensive range of hot water extraction machines. Featuring a host of new performance benefits to provide power, performance and convenience in a brand new extractor design, the Endeavor's specifications include dual 6.6 in. high performance, low noise vacuum motors; the ultra-reliable 150 psi induction motor pump and a slide-in version of Prochem's advanced Heat 'n' Run in-line stainless steel heat exchanger.
“Protective heavy duty metal brackets or covers that fit over an existing dispenser can spoil the aesthetic look of the dispenser as well as make servicing more difficult,” argues Product Manager Nupur Saxena.
