Welcome to the
Cleanzine - the original Cleaning & Hygiene industry e-news Read by industry professionals in 148 countries worldwide! I write this in an odd-looking light. In the UK (well certainly the parts I frequent, anyway) we rarely have really visible air pollution but over the past couple of days there has been a dull pinkish tinge to the sky. I understand it’s something to do with sand having been blown in from the Sahara combined with low pressure and warm temperatures and was excited – as an early riser - to see what the weather forecasters had heralded as a beautiful sunrise. It wasn’t… the pollution put the kybosh on that. Off course, once again, this is good news for the cleaning industry as the news bulletins are full of people complaining about the ‘pink dust’ all over their cars and buildings. These cars and buildings will need to be brought back up to scratch so service providers with savvy marketing people will, no doubt, be taking full advantage… Across the other side of the world in Singapore, cleaning businesses are gearing up to get themselves licensed to comply with new legislation. Singapore has long been known in the Western world to have very high standards of cleaning and the new legislation will see compulsory employment contracts, training and a progressive wage plan to ensure that cleaners receive wages which are commensurate with their skills, training and productivity and that standards, as a result, become even better. Apparently an estimated 55,000 resident cleaners will benefit from the scheme. Am I the only one wishing we could follow suit? An answer to the perennial question: Is it safe to go in the pool? Sanitary-minded pool-goers who preach "no urinating in the pool," despite ordinary and Olympic swimmers admitting to the practice, now have scientific evidence to back up their concern. Researchers are reporting that when mixed, urine and chlorine can form substances that can cause potential health problems. Their study, 'Volatile Disinfection Byproducts Resulting from Chlorination of Uric Acid: Implications for Swimming Pools' appears in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology. Cleaning Products Europe 2014 'the best ever' Cleaning Products Europe 2014, which took place in Manchester last week, has been judged 'the best ever' by many of those that attended. Not only did the event bring together more than 120 industry professionals from across 50 different companies in the cleaning products market for a fantastic 'off-stage' networking opportunity, but the thought-provoking presentations delivered by the line-up of leading experts led to highly engaging discussions and market impacting revelations. All Singaporean cleaning businesses will soon have to be licenced When the Environmental Public Health Amendment Bill came into force in Singapore on Tuesday, cleaning businesses were reminded to submit their applications for cleaning business licences soon or risk not having a licence by the 1st September 2014 deadline.
All general cleaning businesses - even if these services form only part of their overall business, will have to be licensed and clients will now also be tasked with checking that their cleaning service providers are licensed, via the NEA website. Soapbox: What cleaning professionals need to know about pre-sprays Doyle Bloss, marketing director for US Products, argues that for pre-spraying to work properly, you need to know what you're doing...
"With more facilities service providers now including carpet cleaning among their tasks, it is important to learn how to properly pre-spray a carpet. More than 100,000 people pass through Rome Airport every day, so what do the facility's managers use to cater for all those parents and their children? Vectair Systems' Babyminder of course!
"We use the latest technology to find safe and secure ways of improving infant care whilst ensuring maximum hygiene," says the company. Recycling your food waste is easier than you think! Restaurants, hotels, pubs, cafes and takeaways that recycle their food waste find that doing the right thing and helping the environment doesn't need to take up additional time or space, or create hygiene issues... and it could even save them money! Every year more than 500,000 tonnes of food are wasted in restaurants, pubs, hotels and quick service restaurants in the UK - that's the equivalent of almost 1 billion average plates of food - but it doesn't have to be completely wasted. It will affect over 1 million employees and has not gone down well with the trade unions, whose leaders are suggesting that strike action needs to be taken.
